Chapter 4 - The Financial Guillotine

Adrian’s iPhone buzzed against the table. At the same second, Marcus’s phone chimed, followed by the tablet in Eleanor’s lap.

Adrian picked it up, scowling. "What is this?"

He answered the call, putting it to his ear. "Gordon? Why are you calling me on my private—"

He stopped. The color visibly drained from his face, receding like water through sand.

"What do you mean, frozen?" Adrian stammered, rising from his chair so fast his silver fork tumbled to the floor. "Vanguard-Apex called our loans? Today is the eighth! The notes don't mature until the fifteenth! That's a breach of contract!"

The voice on the other end was hysterical, loud enough that even Eleanor heard the panicked shrieks of the chief financial officer.

*"They exercised the acceleration clause under Section 9! They cited material instability and leadership misconduct! Adrian, every single operating account at Chase and Citibank has been seized by the receivers! The payroll bounced! The dockworkers in Newark walked off the piers twenty minutes ago—forty million dollars in cold-chain insulin is spoiling under the sun, and the union reps are refusing to touch the cranes!"*

"Tell them to get back to work or I'll sue the union!" Adrian screamed.

*"You can't sue anybody! Our corporate counsel just resigned! All four senior partners walked out because the Department of Justice just served an emergency subpoena at our headquarters!"*

The call went dead.

Before Adrian could breathe, Marcus gasped. "Adrian... look at the news."

Marcus turned his tablet around. Every major business headline was flashing the exact same breaking report:

**VALE GLOBAL LOGISTICS FACES CRIMINAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION: MASSIVE EMBEZZLEMENT, CONTRACT RIGGING, AND CRUELTY CHARGES FILED BY US ATTORNEY.**

Beneath the headline was a still image from the video Marcus had filmed the night before—not the edited version, but the raw footage, showing my suspended wrists, the bloody whip in Adrian’s hand, and Vanessa’s laughing face in high definition. The banner below read: *CEO Adrian Vale Implicated in Domestic Torture and Felony Battery.*

"How did they get this?" Marcus whispered, his hands trembling as the tablet slipped against his knees. "I didn't upload it anywhere public! It was on my private, encrypted cloud!"

"Dante Moretti took it," I said quietly, watching them unravel. "He built the encryption protocols your company uses three years ago. You paid his subsidiary for your cybersecurity, Adrian. You just never bothered to read the parent company's name on the invoices."

Eleanor stood up, knocking her teacup over, splashing brown liquid across the white linen. "This is absurd! Richard! Richard, get down here right now!"

Her husband, Richard Vale, did not come down from the upstairs library.

Instead, the estate's heavy iron gates outside groaned. Then came the sound of rending metal.
