Chapter 7 - Exposing the Viper

Dante chuckled, tapping a series of commands into his handheld terminal. The massive 85-inch smart television mounted on the conservatory wall clicked on instantly.

"Vanessa Crowe," Dante recited, his voice dripping with mockery. "Real name: Vanessa Kowalski. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Indicted four years ago in Chicago for grand larceny after drugging an elderly pharmaceutical executive and draining his bearer bonds. Fled the state under an assumed identity."

Vanessa froze. Her manicured hands dropped from the necklace.

"Over the past eighteen months," Dante continued, displaying bank transfers, surveillance photos, and encrypted chat logs on the screen, "you have been funneling confidential logistics data from Adrian’s desk to an offshore maritime syndicate based in Cyprus. You weren't his mistress out of love, Vanessa. You were milking this idiot dry before his company collapsed."

Adrian lifted his head from the floor, his face pale, sweat stinging his eyes. "What? Vanessa... what is he talking about?"

Dante advanced the slide. A video played on the screen—crisp, high-definition security footage taken from inside the ballroom the previous evening, before the party started.

The screen showed Vanessa standing near the buffet table, deliberately tipping a glass of full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon onto the hem of her own white dress. She then walked across the room, waited until Anna was carrying a tray of water glasses, and threw herself backward into Anna’s path, screaming about being assaulted.

The audio captured Vanessa’s whisper clearly: *"Now he has to buy me the emerald bracelet."*

Adrian stared at the screen, his breath coming in ragged, horrified gasps. "You... you ruined the dress yourself? You lied to me?"

"You absolute fool," Vanessa hissed, dropping the sweet, helpless act entirely. Her face twisted into a mask of pure venom. "You thought I actually loved you? You’re a pathetic, insecure man-child who needs to whip his wife to feel like a man! You're broke, Adrian! You’ve been broke for six months!"

Matteo stepped forward and snatched my mother’s sapphire pendant from around Vanessa’s neck with a sharp snap of the gold chain.

Vanessa gasped, clutching her throat.

"That belongs to Vincent Moretti’s daughter," Matteo said, pocketing the jewel. "You aren't fit to touch the dust on its box."

Two female Aegis security officers entered the room, grabbed Vanessa by both arms, and dragged her toward the foyer. Her screams echoed off the high ceiling until the heavy front doors slammed shut.
