Chapter 9 - Legal Reckoning and Public Fall

The trial of Maris Williams became the scandal of the decade, though Victor ensured that Catherine and Annie were shielded from every court appearance.
Marcus Vance dismantled the defense with surgical precision. Over three agonizing days, bank records, forged divorce papers, and hotel security footage were entered into the public record. Brian Smith took the witness stand, presenting audio recordings where Maris explicitly instructed him to intimidate Catherine and monitor her movements to ensure she never reached Victor.
The public, which had once viewed Maris Williams as a glamorous philanthropist, turned on her with fierce outrage. Editorials branded her the "Cruel Matriarch," and protests formed outside the courthouse demanding maximum sentencing.
On the final day of the trial, the judge did not mince words.
“In all my years on the bench,” Judge Harrison remarked, peering over his glasses at the pale, disheveled woman sitting at the defense table, “I have rarely witnessed such cold, calculated malice directed at one’s own flesh and blood. You abused your wealth, your influence, and your position to drive an innocent mother to the brink of death and force an eight-year-old child into starvation—all to feed your grotesque vanity.”
The sentence was severe: twenty-two years at the Santa Martha Women’s Penitentiary, with no possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. Additionally, the court ordered full asset forfeiture, returning every stolen dollar to a trust established solely for Annie’s education and Catherine’s medical care.

As Maris was led away in prison orange, she looked across the courtroom, hoping to catch a glimpse of Victor. But the spectator benches were empty. Victor had not even bothered to attend. Her existence had become completely irrelevant to the life he was rebuilding.
