Chapter 8 - The Road to Recovery

The weeks that followed brought a quiet peace to the Williams family, though the scars remained deep.

Catherine was moved from the hospital to a secluded, sun-drenched estate in the hills of Silverspring, far away from the paparazzi and the venomous whispers of high society. The villa was surrounded by private gardens, ancient oak trees, and high stone walls that guaranteed absolute privacy.

Her recovery was slow. Her lungs required daily therapy, and her body took weeks to accept regular, nutrient-dense meals without nausea. But every morning, she woke up to the sound of birds singing outside her window, rather than the clatter of the Northside freight trains.

Annie blossomed. Under the care of trauma specialists and loving tutors, the dark circles beneath her eyes faded. Her skin gained a healthy, rosy glow, and her hair, once brittle and dull, grew thick and shiny.

One sunny afternoon, Victor sat on the back veranda, watching Annie chase a golden retriever puppy across the manicured lawn. Catherine walked out slowly, wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl Victor had draped over her shoulders.

She sat down beside him, looking at their daughter’s joyful laughter.

“She hasn't had a nightmare in four days,” Catherine said softly, her voice still carrying a faint rasp from her illness.

Victor reached over, gently taking her hand. “And you? Do you still wake up thinking you are back in Northside?”

Catherine looked down at their joined hands. “Sometimes. I wake up reaching for my uniform, wondering if I’m late for the five o'clock shift. Then I see the sunlight, and I realize it wasn't just a dream. We survived.”

Victor pulled her closer, resting his chin on her hair. “You survived because you are the strongest person I have ever known. I will spend the rest of my days earning your forgiveness, Catherine. I don't care if it takes fifty years.”

Catherine turned her head, looking into his eyes, seeing the sincerity and remorse that had never left his gaze. “You don't have to earn it anymore, Victor. You brought us home. That is all that matters.”
