Chapter 7 - The Matriarch's Defiance

At three in the afternoon, the heavy oak doors of the hospital suite burst open. Maris Williams marched in, draped in a mink coat, flanked by two private lawyers. Her face was flushed with venomous rage.

“Victor!” she hissed, ignoring the nurses who tried to bar her entry. “How dare you cut off my credit lines? I was humiliated at the bank today! My card was declined in front of the entire country club board! Have you completely lost your mind over this low-class tramp?”

Catherine flinched in her bed, her heart monitor beeping frantically. Annie, who had been drawing at the table, dropped her crayons and ran behind Victor, trembling.

Victor stood up slowly. He towered over his mother, radiating an aura of lethal restraint.

“Lower your voice in the presence of my family,” Victor said.

“Your family?” Maris scoffed, waving a manicured hand toward Catherine. “Look at her! A sickly, penniless stray who couldn't even keep herself off the streets! She dragged your name through the gutter! If the press finds out that my granddaughter was rummaging through garbage bins, our stock prices will plummet tomorrow morning! I did what any mother of our status would do—I tried to prune the rotten branches from our tree!”

“The only rot in this family,” Victor said, stepping directly into her path, “is you.”

He gestured to Marcus Vance, who stepped forward with two uniformed police detectives.

Maris’s eyes widened as the detectives produced a pair of steel handcuffs. “What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am?”

“Maris Williams,” Detective Reynolds announced formally, “you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and felony child endangerment. You have the right to remain silent.”

“Victor!” Maris shrieked, backing away toward her personal lawyers. “Tell them this is a misunderstanding! Tell them! Robert, do something!”

Her lawyer cleared his throat and stepped back, looking at the floor. “Mrs. Williams, the forensic evidence Mr. Vance provided is airtight. We cannot interfere with a lawful warrant.”

As the cold steel snapped around her wrists, Maris’s arrogance shattered into desperate panic. “Victor, I am your mother! I gave you life! I built this empire with your father! You cannot do this to me!”

Victor looked at her with unyielding disgust. “My father died of shame because of your greed. You will spend the rest of your days eating prison rations, Maris. And every time you look at the concrete walls, remember the four-dollar room where you forced my wife and child to starve.”

The detectives dragged Maris out of the ward, her desperate screams echoing down the marble corridor until the heavy doors swung shut.
