Chapter 8 - The Interrogation Room

The basement level of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service regional office in Arlington was a world entirely divorced from the chandeliers of the St. Regis.
There were no marble floors, no white orchids, and no vintage champagne. There was only the low, hum of industrial fluorescent lighting, the smell of burnt institutional coffee, and walls painted in a dull, bureaucratic gray designed to crush the human spirit.
Victoria Carter sat at a stainless steel table, her wrists no longer cuffed, but her freedom entirely illusory.
The Oscar de la Renta jacket had been confiscated as evidence due to the blood traces from Natalie’s cheek on the diamond setting of her ring. She was now dressed in a standard-issue orange cotton detention smock, oversized and rough against her skin. Her face was scrubbed clean of all cosmetics; without her expensive creams, powder, and hair spray, she looked every day of her sixty-four years.
Across the table sat Agent Miller and a military magistrate from the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Vance—Ethan’s cousin and one of the most ruthless prosecutors in the armed forces.
A single manila folder lay open between them.
"You have been formally charged under the civilian federal code and the UCMJ," Robert Vance said, his voice flat, rhythmic, and clinical. "Twelve counts of wire fraud, three counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of extortion involving military compensation, and two counts of assault on a commissioned officer."
Victoria sneered, though the tremor in her lower lip betrayed her. "This is a farce. My civil attorneys will have this thrown out by sunrise. Ethan Vance orchestrated this entire circus because he wanted to humiliate me. He has poisoned Natalie's mind against her own family."
Robert Vance didn't raise his voice. He simply slid an eight-by-ten glossy photograph across the table.
It was an enlarged, high-resolution still frame from the ballroom security cameras. It captured the exact millisecond Victoria’s hand had connected with Natalie’s face. The focus was so sharp you could see the distortion of the skin on Natalie's cheek, the spray of saliva from her parted lips, and the cold, unhinged fury in Victoria’s eyes.
"This is not a domestic dispute, Victoria," Robert Vance said quietly. "This is an unprovoked physical assault on an active-duty Lieutenant Colonel in the presence of the Chief of Staff of the Army. Under the enhanced federal sentencing guidelines passed last year, an assault on a senior military officer conducting classified intelligence coordination carries a mandatory minimum of five years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole."
Victoria’s chest heaved. "She was my daughter! A mother has a right to correct her daughter!"
"Not when her daughter is an active intelligence director, and not when the 'correction' is an attempt to extort three million dollars in combat survivor funds," Agent Miller interrupted.
Miller slid a second document forward. This one bore the seal of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
"As of 0600 hours this morning," Miller said, "the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, acting under Title 38 of the United States Code, has initiated the complete revocation of all survivor benefits, pensions, and spousal privileges previously granted to you following General James Carter's death."
Victoria gasped as if she had been plunged into icy water. "What? You can't do that! That is my pension! James worked forty years for that!"
"James worked forty years for the United States," Robert Vance said coldly. "And under Section 6105, any beneficiary convicted of treasonous activity, felony fraud against the Department of Defense, or subversive extortion against an active service member forfeits all rights to survivor compensation. You will not receive a single penny from the United States military for the rest of your natural life."
"My townhouse..." Victoria stammered, her fingers clawing at the edge of the steel table. "The house in Savannah... my car..."
"The Alexandria townhouse was purchased using funds siphoned from the General’s private logistics trust through forged digital signatures," Miller said with devastating finality. "The asset forfeiture unit of the Department of Justice filed a lis pendens against both properties two hours ago. They are being seized, liquidated at federal auction, and the proceeds will be placed into the United States Treasury to repay the European banking syndicates your daughter defrauded."
Victoria stared at the documents, her vision blurring, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Everything was gone.
The parties. The status. The country club membership. The townhouse on Prince Street. The winter trips to St. Moritz. The respect. The fear she had used to control her daughters.
She was penniless. She was an inmate in an orange jumpsuit sitting in an interrogation room with nowhere left to turn.
"Where is Chloe?" Victoria whispered, her voice finally breaking into a genuine, terrified sob. "Let me see my daughter. Please. Let me speak to Chloe."
Robert Vance closed the folder with a sharp, decisive snap.
"Miss Chloe Carter waived her right to legal counsel forty minutes ago," Vance said, rising from his chair. "She is currently in Room 104, providing a full confession implicating you as the mastermind behind the entire European loan fraud scheme in exchange for a recommendation that she serve her sentence in a minimum-security medical camp."
Victoria’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with horror. "What? No... Chloe wouldn't... I did this for her! I ruined myself to save her from the Swiss banks!"
"And she sold you to save herself from an extra thirty months," Robert Vance said, walking toward the heavy steel door. He paused with his hand on the security handle, looking back at the broken woman sitting alone beneath the buzzing lights.
May you like
"You spent twenty years teaching Chloe that family was just an asset to be exploited, Victoria," Vance said softly. "You shouldn't be surprised that she learned the lesson so well."
