Chapter 6 - The Unveiling

Ethan Vance nodded once to the two military police officers standing by the entrance. "Signal the tactical team outside. Secure the secondary suspects."

Within thirty seconds, the double doors of the ballroom swung wide open.

Four heavily armed, combat-geared federal marshals stepped through the entrance, followed by two uniformed female officers from the Fairfax County Police Department. The room, which had begun the evening as a glittering sanctuary of champagne and social posturing, had fully transformed into a federal interdiction zone.

Guests backed away against the walls, creating a wide, empty corridor down the center of the room. Society matrons who had spent the last two hours gossiping about Victoria’s fabulous wealth clutched their pearls in horror; corporate executives who had entertained Chloe’s flirtations quietly backed into the shadows, praying their names were not listed on the seized ledgers.

"Victoria Delancey Carter," the lead Federal Marshal announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. "You are under arrest pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The charges include wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit extortion against a federal officer, and felony assault."

Victoria backed away, her hands clawing behind her against a banquet table, knocking over a towering pyramid of champagne glasses. The crystal came crashing down in an explosion of foam and splintered glass, drenching the hem of her designer jacket.

"Don't touch me!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a raw, feral shriek. "Do you know who I am? I am the widow of General James Carter! I have dined with presidents! I have sat at the head table in the State Department! You cannot put your hands on me!"

"Mrs. Carter," the marshal said, his voice completely indifferent to her lineage. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back, or you will be placed on the floor."

"Ethan! Stop this!" Victoria shrieked, looking toward Ethan with bulging, bloodshot eyes. "You love my daughter! If you destroy me, you destroy Natalie! The scandal will ruin her! No decent society family will ever associate with her! You will be marrying the daughter of a convicted felon!"

Ethan smiled. It was a terrifying, humorless expression that sent a visible shiver down Victoria’s spine.

"Victoria," Ethan said, reaching inside his jacket and pulling out a leather-bound military credential folder, flipping it open to reveal his gold insignia and high-level Department of Defense clearance. "I don't give a damn about society families. And as for Natalie’s reputation... she doesn't need your name to command respect."

Ethan turned toward General Vance. "General, permission to present the official orders."

"Granted, Colonel," General Vance said, snapping to attention.

Ethan looked at Natalie. For the first time all evening, the icy hardness in his eyes melted into profound, unshakeable pride.

"By order of the Secretary of the Army and the Joint Special Operations Command," Ethan announced, his voice carrying with absolute authority across the silent hall, "Major Natalie Elizabeth Carter is hereby relieved of her deep-cover operational assignment within the Special Activities Center. Effective immediately, she is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and assigned as Deputy Director of Intelligence for Special Operations Command."

A collective, audible gasp swept through the room.

The junior officers in attendance snapped their heels together and came to rigid attention. General Vance raised his right hand in a sharp, flawless salute. One by one, every active-duty officer in the room—colonels, majors, captains, and three four-star generals—faced Natalie Carter and saluted.

Victoria stood paralyzed, her hands half-raised in the air, her brain completely unable to process what she was witnessing.

Her daughter.

The girl she had dismissed as an unloved, plain, bureaucratic clerk.

The daughter she had slapped twice across the face like an errant dog.

She wasn't a civilian secretary. She was a decorated, high-ranking intelligence officer who had operated at levels of government power Victoria couldn't even fathom. The very officers Victoria had spent decades trying to flatter were now standing at attention before her eldest child.

"You..." Victoria whispered, her voice barely a croak through her dust-dry throat. "You were never an assistant..."

Natalie looked at her mother, her posture straight, her head held high, the red welt on her cheek glowing like a badge of combat honor.

"I took the oath when I was eighteen, Mother," Natalie said, her voice clear and resonant. "The same oath Dad took. To defend this country against all enemies, foreign and domestic."

Natalie took one slow, deliberate step toward her mother.

"Tonight... you proved to be domestic."
