Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Coup

At 10:00 AM, the executive boardroom on the 48th floor of the Vance Tower was suffocating with tension.

Thomas had called an emergency meeting of the board of directors. He stood at the head of the mahogany table, dressed in a fresh charcoal suit, though no amount of concealer could hide the dark bags under his eyes.

"Gentlemen, members of the board," Thomas began, projecting a false air of authority as he tapped his microphone. "I have called this extraordinary session because of an unprecedented crisis. Last night, my wife, Victoria, suffered a severe, violent psychotic break at our anniversary gala. She assaulted an innocent consultant and created a public scandal that threatens the reputation of Vance Enterprises. Given her unstable mental state, I am moving to invoke Article Nine of our corporate charter: the immediate suspension of her voting rights and the appointment of myself as sole conservator of the family trust."

Several board members shifted uncomfortably, whispering among themselves.

"Do you have a second for this motion, Thomas?" asked Robert Hayes, the oldest board member and my father’s former partner.

"I second it," Thomas said arrogantly. "As Chief Executive Officer, I have the authority under emergency bylaws—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding crash.

I walked in. I wore an ivory tailored suit, my dark hair pulled back in a severe, elegant chignon, diamond earrings catching the morning sunlight. Behind me walked Arthur Sterling, flanked by two detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s Major Crimes Division and three armed federal marshals.

Thomas froze mid-sentence, his papers fluttering from his hand onto the table. "Victoria? What is the meaning of this? You have no right to disrupt an official board meeting!"

"On the contrary, Thomas," I said, walking slowly down the center aisle, the sound of my heels echoing through the stunned silence. "Under Section Four of the Vance Enterprises bylaws, a felon cannot hold the position of Chief Executive Officer, nor can they preside over a quorum."

"Felon?!" Thomas shouted, slamming his fist on the table. "You're delusional! Security, remove this woman!"

The security guards at the door didn't move. They stood at attention, their eyes fixed on the federal marshals.

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, opening a leather portfolio. "At 8:30 this morning, the Cook County State's Attorney officially filed a true bill of indictment against Thomas Vance for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and ninety-two counts of federal wire fraud and embezzlement totaling forty-three million dollars."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Directors jumped to their feet, shouting in disbelief, while Thomas gripped the edge of the podium, his knuckles turning stark white.

"That's a lie! It’s slander!" he screamed, pointing a shaking finger at me. "She has no evidence! She attacked Chloe Davenport!"

"Actually," Detective Miller said, stepping past the board members and producing a set of steel handcuffs, "Ms. Davenport just finished giving a sworn video deposition implicating you as the mastermind. We also have the surveillance footage of you handing her the chemical compound, along with the digital receipts from your encrypted crypto-wallet purchasing Succinylcholine from an unlicensed lab."

Thomas’s knees buckled. He grabbed the chair behind him to keep from collapsing to the floor.
