Chapter 6 - The Poisoner Wakes

At 7:15 AM, the ICU room was silent save for the rhythmic beep of the cardiac monitor and the mechanical hiss of the oxygen line.
Chloe was propped up in bed, looking like a shattered ghost. Her face was swollen, her vocal cords raw from the tube they had pulled from her throat an hour earlier. When the door opened and I walked in alone, locking the bolt behind me with a loud, metallic *click*, her heart monitor spiked frantically: 110, 125, 140.
"Don't bother trying to scream, Chloe," I said smoothly, pulling a sterile metal chair to the side of her bed and sitting down. "The nurses know I’m Thomas Vance’s wife. They assume I’m here out of profound Christian charity."
"Get... out..." she croaked, her voice sounding like gravel grinding in a blender. She tried to pull the blanket over her chest, but her fingers were clumsy, still suffering from peripheral neuropathy. "Thomas... will... destroy you..."
I pulled out my phone and placed it flat on her tray table, hitting play.
The audio recording filled the quiet room. It was Thomas's voice from the hospital corridor just hours earlier, recorded cleanly through the wire Marcus had planted on my coat lapel:
*"Chloe manipulated me! She blackmailed me! She threatened to ruin the company if I didn't help her... She's an unhinged lunatic, Victoria. I had nothing to do with this!"*
Chloe stared at the phone. Her pale lips parted, trembling, as tears welled in her bloodshot eyes. "No... he... he loves me..."
"He used you as a disposable delivery girl," I corrected her, leaning forward until she could see the cold certainty in my eyes. "He handed you the poison so his fingerprints wouldn't be on the glass. He promised you forty million dollars and a mansion in the south of France, didn't he? But right now, his high-priced criminal defense attorney is drafting an affidavit placing the entire plot on you. You're looking at attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit homicide, and grand larceny. You will spend the next thirty years in a state penitentiary while Thomas claims he was an innocent victim of your obsession."
"He bought it!" she suddenly wheezed, sobbing hysterically, tears tracking through her smeared mascara. "Thomas bought the drug! He gave it to me in the hall! He said it was just a paralytic... he said it would just put you into a coma so he could claim power of attorney!"
"I know," I said softly, sliding a legal document and a pen toward her. "And if you want to avoid spending the prime of your life eating cafeteria slop in a maximum-security prison, you are going to sign this full, unvarnished confession right now. You give me Thomas on a silver platter, and my attorneys will recommend a plea deal for third-degree reckless endangerment."
Chloe looked at the pen, then at the door, then back at me. She realized, in that horrifying moment, that between the man who poisoned her and the woman who made her drink it, only one held the power of life and death over her future.

With trembling, damaged fingers, she took the pen.
