Chapter 3 - The Chemical Truth

The sirens howled through the cold Chicago night, red and blue lights painting the neoclassical pillars of the hotel in shades of blood and ice. Chloe was wheeled out on a gurney, oxygen mask strapped over her blue-tinted lips, her body shaking from violent involuntary tremors. Thomas hovered by the paramedics, visibly trembling, trying and failing to intercept the medical crew's notes.

I didn't follow the ambulance. Instead, I bypassed the media gathering on the front steps, slipped into the rear of my black Maybach, and handed the sealed napkin containing the glass and pouch to Marcus Cole, my private investigator and former homicide detective.

"Have this at the private lab within twenty minutes," I ordered, leaning back against the leather seat, staring straight ahead. "I want a complete chromatographic breakdown before midnight."

"Are you all right, Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked, his rugged face etched with genuine concern through the rearview mirror.

"Never better, Marcus. The board meeting is in forty-eight hours. Now I have the leverage to ensure Thomas walks out of Vance Enterprises in handcuffs instead of a parachute."

By 11:45 PM, I was seated in Marcus’s downtown office. Rain slashed against the panoramic windows overlooking the Loop. The laboratory's preliminary fax hummed through the machine, spitting out crisp, black-and-white pages.

Marcus scanned the report, his jaw tightening with every line. "Jesus, Victoria. This isn't some date-rape sedative. This is concentrated Succinylcholine mixed with a customized neuro-paralytic compound."

I kept my hand steady as I took the sheet. "Explain it in plain English."

"It’s an odorless, fast-acting respiratory paralyzer used in covert veterinary euthanasia," Marcus said, tapping the paper. "In the dosage detected in that champagne flute, within fifteen minutes of ingestion, your diaphragm would have stopped moving. You would have suffocated in front of two hundred people while completely paralyzed, unable to speak or cry out. Given your well-known history of mild asthma, the coroner would have ruled it acute bronchospasm leading to cardiac arrest. Untraceable unless someone knew specifically to run a mass spectrometry test within two hours."

A chill ran down my spine, but it was quickly scorched away by pure, incendiary rage.

Thomas hadn't just taken a mistress to boost his pathetic midlife ego. He hadn't just embezzled millions from the foundation my late father built. He had calculated my death to the milligram, intending to watch me choke on my own breath in a public ballroom while he inherited my controlling shares and collected on a seventy-million-dollar umbrella life insurance policy.

"Chloe was just his delivery girl," I murmured, holding the paper over the desk lamp until the stark font burned into my memory. "She thought she was securing her place as the next Mrs. Vance. Instead, she just swallowed her own death sentence."

"What's the status on Chloe?" Marcus asked.

"She’s in the ICU at Northwestern Memorial. Gastric lavage saved her life, but the paralysis did nerve damage. She's awake, Marcus. And terrified."

I stood up, buttoned my coat, and grabbed my gloves. "Get the forensic accountant on the line. The hunt begins tonight."
