Chapter 7 - The Ambush at Torre Europa

By two o'clock in the afternoon, I was back at my office in Torre Europa, sitting in an executive boardroom with my audit team. We were preparing a multi-million-euro merger review for an international client, and my mind was entirely focused on numbers, spreadsheets, and forensic analysis. I felt lighter than I had in years. The toxic cloud of Javier’s passive aggression had evaporated.

My executive assistant, Elena, knocked softly and stepped into the room, her face pale.

"Señora Morales... your husband is in the reception lobby."

I frowned. "Did security allow him up?"

"He pushed past the front desk, claiming it was an urgent family emergency," Elena whispered. "He is creating a scene. He is shouting for you."

I closed my laptop with a quiet click. "Excuse me for five minutes, team."

I walked down the frosted-glass corridor to the grand reception area. Javier stood in the center of the lobby, surrounded by three corporate security guards who were trying to keep him contained.

He was a shadow of the polished aristocrat from the previous evening. His bespoke suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and his eyes bloodshot with rage and exhaustion. The receptionists looked terrified, while several colleagues watched from the glass partitions.

"Clara!" he yelled the moment he saw me. "Tell your damn lawyers to withdraw these papers!"

He brandished the thick legal document Sofía had served him an hour earlier.

"You froze my business accounts! You served me with a restraining order! Do you know what my partners said when a court bailiff walked into my boardroom during a client presentation?"

"They probably realized what I discovered months ago, Javier," I said, keeping my hands calmly folded in front of me, projecting complete professional poise. "That you are an embezzler and a fraud."

"You are my wife!" he roared, lunging forward, but the two security guards immediately stepped in, seizing him by the arms. "You have a duty to support this family! You cannot freeze my liquidity! I have payroll to meet on Friday! I have interest payments due on the Toledo estate!"

"The Toledo estate?" I asked, raising my voice just enough for everyone in the room to hear. "You mean the estate you secretly mortgaged behind your mother's back to pay off your bad investments and sports betting debts?"

Javier turned ghostly white. The fight drained out of him in an instant, his mouth dropping open. "How... how do you know about that?"

"I am a forensic auditor, Javier. You tried to hide bank transfers within nested holding accounts. It took me forty-five minutes to uncover what you spent two years concealing."

I stepped closer, looking at him with pity and cold disdain.

"You came to my office hoping to humiliate me into backing down. You thought that by making a scene, I would write you a check just to save face, the way you forced me to do in restaurants and country clubs."

I turned to the head of building security.

"Chief, this man has an active restraining order issued by the Juzgado de Violencia sobre la Mujer number four of Madrid. He is within fifty meters of me, which constitutes a felony violation of a judicial order. Call the police and have him removed."

"No! Clara, wait!" Javier thrash against the guards as they forced him toward the elevator bank. "Don't do this! We can settle this privately! Clara! My mother is having a heart attack! Clara!"

The elevator doors slid shut on his desperate cries, cutting him off mid-sentence.

I smoothed the lapel of my navy blazer, turned to my assistant, and said, "Elena, please order lunch for the team. We have a presentation to finish."
