Chapter 2 - The Blue Flashing Lights

The red and blue strobes of the Policía Nacional cut through the restaurant's leaded glass facade, painting the gilded moldings in stark, urgent flashes. Two officers entered with brisk steps, their boots clicking against the polished marble floor. The dining room watched in transfixed horror as the officers bypassed the podium and walked directly to our table.

"Good evening. Who placed the call?" the lead officer, an older man with graying temples and a badge reading Inspector Morales, inquired.

"I did," I replied, standing up with deliberate grace. I did not attempt to hide the dark red stain that covered the front of my designer dress. "I am Clara Morales."

"Inspector, this is an absurd misunderstanding," Javier interjected immediately, puffing out his chest and offering a practiced, aristocratic smile. He reached into his coat for his wallet. "I am Javier Rivas. My family has been patronizing this establishment for three decades. My wife is overwrought. We had a minor domestic spat—an accidental slip of a glass—and she reacted with hysterical exaggeration."

Mercedes nodded furiously, fanning herself with a leather-bound dessert menu. "It is shameful, officer! Truly scandalous that you were even dispatched for this nonsense. My son would never raise a hand to anyone. This woman is unhinged. She is attempting to ruin our reputation because she cannot afford to dine in our circle."

Inspector Morales looked from Mercedes’s trembling chin down to my ruined dress, then to the overturned glass where red residue still dripped onto the linen. His expression did not soften.

"Señora Morales," the officer said, turning his back on Javier. "Did your husband intentionally throw the contents of that glass at you?"

"He did," I answered evenly. "He demanded that I pay a bill exceeding five thousand euros under duress. When I refused to cover the unauthorized additions to the check, he stated our marriage was over and hurled the wine directly into my face. The restaurant has security cameras directly overhead."

"We do, Officer," the maitre d' stated without hesitation. "And the footage has already been backed up to the manager's terminal. The assault was deliberate and unprovoked."

Javier’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled purple. "Eduardo, you idiot! I know the owner of this restaurant! I will have you fired by sunrise!"

"Threatening staff will not help your case, Señor Rivas," the second officer warned, stepping closer and placing a heavy hand on Javier's shoulder. "Under Spanish law, an act of physical aggression against a spouse in a public or private setting constitutes gender-based violence. You are being detained for questioning."

"Detained?" Mercedes shrieked, rising so quickly her pearls caught on her glass of sparkling water, sending it tumbling. "How dare you touch him! Do you know who my late husband was? Do you know who my family is?"

"Your family is currently subject to the penal code, Señora," Inspector Morales replied without missing a beat. "Step back, please."

The restaurant fell into a dead hush as the second officer took Javier’s arms and pulled them behind his back. The sharp click of handcuffs ratcheting around Javier’s wrists echoed across the dining room like a gunshot.

Several prominent Madrid figures—people Mercedes spent her entire life trying to impress—watched with morbid fascination. Some discreetly raised their phones, recording the scene from behind silk napkins and floral arrangements.

"Clara!" Javier hissed, his bravado crumbling as the cold steel bit into his wrists. He struggled against the officer’s grip, his expensive jacket bunching awkwardly over his shoulders. "Tell them it was an accident! Clara, think about my firm! Think about our name!"

I looked at him, feeling an overwhelming, liberating emptiness where my affection used to live.

"You told me our marriage was over tonight, Javier," I said softly, loud enough only for him and his mother to hear. "I simply decided to agree with you."

As the officers escorted my thrashing husband toward the exit, Mercedes collapsed back into her chair, her face pale and her hand clutching her throat. But I was not finished. I turned toward the table and picked up the leather folder containing the bill.
