Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

At nine-thirty, I walked into the glass-and-steel offices of Delgado & Associates on Paseo de la Castellana. My attorney, Sofía Delgado, had been my closest confidante since our university days at ICADE. She was legendary in Madrid for dismantling arrogant men in divorce proceedings.

Sofía sat across from me, a sleek silver pen balanced in her fingers, reviewing the dossier I had compiled over the weekend.

"This is poetry, Clara," Sofía said, her eyes gleaming behind designer frames. "The police report from El Mirador is devastating. The maitre d' and four high-profile witnesses gave sworn statements confirming Javier threw the wine, threatened you verbally, and attempted to coerce you financially. The gender violence court will issue an immediate protective order without hesitation."

"Good," I said, setting down my tea. "Now look at the bank statements from his boutique consulting firm."

Sofía flipped through the forensic audit I had run the previous night. Her eyebrows shot up. "Mother of God. He wasn't just broke; he was running an illegal carousel of debt. He took out personal loans against his mother's ancestral estate in Toledo, forged her signature on two lines of credit, and was siphoning funds from your joint household management account to cover the interest."

"Mercedes thinks he is a financial genius who subsidizes her lifestyle," I explained. "In reality, Javier has been bleeding her dry while using my funds to cover the hemorrhaging wounds. When I refused to pay the four-thousand-euro luxury tab she added to the restaurant bill, his entire house of cards collapsed. He needed my card to settle the bill because his own business account had forty-two euros left in it."

"And the ancestral home in Toledo?" Sofía asked.

"Mortgaged to eighty-five percent of its valuation," I replied. "The bank issued a notice of default three weeks ago. Javier intercepted the mail so Mercedes wouldn't find out. If they don't produce two hundred and fifty thousand euros by next month, the bank forecloses on the Rivas family estate."

Sofía let out a low whistle, leaning back into her leather chair. "Clara, this isn't just a divorce. This is an execution. What do you want to do?"

"I want everything dissolved cleanly, completely, and without mercy," I stated. "I want the divorce filed under fault grounds of domestic assault. I want a complete audit of the funds he siphoned from our shared household account, and I want an immediate freezing order placed on his remaining business assets to recover what he stole from me."

"And Mercedes?"

"Mercedes has spent five years treating me like dirt under her designer shoes," I said coldly. "She claimed I lacked breeding, that I was an uncouth working girl who tricked her brilliant son. Let her see what her brilliant son has done to her precious dynasty without my money to prop it up."

Sofía smiled, a predatory, brilliant grin. "Consider it done. I'll have the filings served to his office by noon."
