Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

Three weeks later, the boardroom of Hayes Global was packed to capacity for the quarterly shareholder meeting.

The scandal surrounding Detective Thomas Carter had blown the lid off the city's corruption, resulting in the arrest of two commissioners and twelve precinct captains. But Hayes Global had emerged completely untouched. In fact, under the brilliant restructuring plan executed by the newly appointed Chief Operating Officer, the company’s stock had surged fourteen percent in twenty days.

Nora Jenkins sat at the head of the long mahogany table.

She was radiant. Wearing a tailored plum-colored three-piece suit that accentuated her curves with fierce, unapologetic elegance, she commanded the room with effortless authority. Her hair was styled in sleek, cascading waves, and on her wrist, where purple fingerprints had once lingered, sat an antique Patek Philippe watch gifted by the chairman.

Across the table, several junior partners who had once whispered about her weight in the breakroom now sat with their notebooks open, furiously scribbling down her every directive.

"The port logistics in Sector Four will be transitioned entirely to the automated crane network by the end of next month," Nora said, tapping her pen against the glass table. "If the union representatives have questions, they come to me, not Mr. Hayes. Is that understood?"

"Understood, Miss Jenkins," three vice presidents chorused in unison, not a single trace of mockery in their eyes.

The double doors at the back of the boardroom opened silently.

Declan Hayes walked in.

He didn't take the seat at the head of the table; he had given that seat to Nora permanently. Instead, he stood near the back wall, leaning casually against the mahogany paneling, his arms crossed over his chest, watching her command the room.

Nora caught his eye. A tiny, knowing smirk played at the corner of her lips. She didn't stumble. She didn't falter. She finished her presentation with the clinical precision of a master tactician, brought the meeting to an orderly adjourn, and waited as the room emptied out in record time.

When the last executive had scurried past Declan with a respectful bow of his head, Declan walked over to the table and clicked the electronic lock on the boardroom doors.

"You're terrifying them, Miss Jenkins," Declan said, his low voice echoing in the quiet room.

Nora leaned back in her leather executive chair—a custom-ordered chair that fit her hips perfectly and had replaced the old furniture three days after Vance’s dismissal.

"They should be terrified, Mr. Hayes," Nora replied, tilting her head up at him as he came to stand beside her chair. "They were lazy, they were prejudiced, and they were losing you eight million dollars a quarter in redundant shipping costs."

Declan chuckled, resting a hand on the arm of her chair and leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "God, you are magnificent."

"I learned from the best," she whispered, meeting him halfway for a slow, deep kiss that tasted of sweet black coffee and absolute triumph.
