Chapter 8 - The Desperate Strike

The relative peace of their newfound reality was shattered forty-eight hours later.
Thomas Carter was not a man who went quietly into the dark. Through a network of corrupt precinct captains and desperate street enforcers who knew they were facing life sentences if Declan’s dossier reached the federal grand jury, Carter managed to slip his transport while being moved between holding locations.
He had one play left: total, scorched-earth vengeance.
It happened on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Declan and Nora were returning from a secure facility in Barrington where Nora had spent three hours reunited with her sister, Clara. Seeing Clara safe, healthy, and laughing had removed the last shadow of grief from Nora’s heart.
Their armored convoy was crossing the industrial bridge over the Chicago River when the lead vehicle exploded.
A modified delivery truck rammed the front Suburban, detonating an improvised explosive that sent a shockwave rattling through the heavy armor of Declan’s Mercedes Maybach. Gunfire immediately erupted—automatic rifle rounds hammering against the bulletproof glass like heavy hail.
"Down!" Declan roared, throwing his entire body over Nora, pinning her to the floorboards of the backseat as glass spiderwebbed across the reinforced windows.
"Declan!" she gasped, her heart surging into her throat.
"Stay flat!" he barked. He pulled a heavy semi-automatic handgun from his shoulder holster, his cold corporate demeanor entirely vanishing, replaced by the lethal general of the Hayes syndicate.
Through the tinted glass, Nora saw muzzle flashes. Carter, wearing a tactical vest and flanked by six rogue officers, was advancing on the vehicle with military-grade rifles, desperate to breach the doors before Declan’s backup arrived.
"The driver is dead," Declan said grimly, glancing at the front partition where the driver’s head rested motionless against the steering wheel. "The engine block is cracked. We have three minutes before they breach the rear glass with armor-piercing rounds."
Nora’s mind raced. The panic that should have paralyzed her was suddenly overridden by the brilliant, analytical machinery of her brain. She looked at the center console between the seats.
"The security override," Nora said, her voice unnervingly calm. "Declan, this car has the prototype hydraulic deployment system you commissioned for the dock transports last month. The switch under the armrest."
Declan looked at her, his eyes flashing with lethal understanding. "The defensive blast."
"If you vent the auxiliary fuel tank using the emergency release, it will flood the tarmac beneath the rear wheels," Nora said rapidly, calculating the pressure gradients in her head. "Then spark the external battery terminal. It’ll create a backdraft that will blow them off the bridge without puncturing our armor."
Declan didn't hesitate. He trusted her mind more than his own instincts.
He flipped the armored cover on the center console and slammed the twin switches.
A hiss of pressurized fuel sprayed from the undercarriage, pooling beneath the bridge’s steel grate. Carter and his men rushed forward, raising their rifles to fire point-blank into the side windows.
Declan depressed the terminal spark.
A massive wall of fire erupted beneath the bridge, catching the rain and fuel in a deafening concussive wave. The blast threw Carter’s men like ragdolls across the slick pavement, their rifles clattering into the dark river below.
Before the smoke could clear, the sirens of Declan’s reinforcement fleet echoed across the bridge. Four black SUVs screeched to a halt, and twenty heavily armed men flooded the tarmac, securing the perimeter with brutal, terrifying efficiency.
Declan pushed the armored door open, stepping out into the rain and smoke. He extended his hand, pulling Nora up beside him.

Lying on the wet asphalt twenty feet away, his body scorched and his leg pinned under a piece of twisted bridge railing, was Thomas Carter.
