Chapter 11 - The Trigger

"You don't know what you're doing, Adrian," Sterling whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and desperation. He stepped closer, his manicured hands twitching at his sides. "You think you're avenging your mother? You think you're doing justice for Julian Vance? You are an infant playing with fire!"

"My mother was murdered," Adrian said, stepping forward until his chest was inches from the attorney's face. "You and my father poisoned her. And then you put Julian in a ditch on Interstate 87."

"Your father did what was necessary to survive!" Sterling hissed, his eyes darting toward the curtains as the auditorium’s master of ceremonies began introducing the keynote speaker over the PA system: *"...And now, please welcome the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Whitmore Holdings, Adrian Whitmore!"*

Applause erupted through the heavy curtain—two hundred voices clapping in anticipation of a billion-dollar lie.

"Walk out there and read the speech, Adrian," Sterling commanded, his voice dropping into a vicious, ragged whisper. "Read the prompter, sign the patent transfers, and we will handle the Vance woman quietly. You will receive two hundred million dollars in stock options before the opening bell. But if you utter a single word of that garbage... you won't leave this stage alive."

Sterling shifted his coat slightly. Beneath the tailored silk lining, the matte-black grip of a concealed firearm was visible in an underarm holster.

"Do you think I care about the money, Arthur?" Adrian whispered.

"I don't care about your morals, boy!" Sterling snapped. "I have two armed men at the door of your penthouse right now. If I do not send an encrypted clearance ping from my watch within the next three minutes, they breach the guest suite. Your sweet little housekeeper's mother and her bastard baby won't make it to lunchtime."

Marissa gasped in horror, her blood running cold. "Leo!"

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure steel. "You’re bluffing. You wouldn't risk the police response on Park Avenue."

"Try me," Sterling snarled, tapping his gold digital watch. "Two minutes and forty seconds, Adrian. Step up to that microphone, smile for the cameras, and bury the Vance name forever. Or watch the last two people who ever cared about Julian die in a puddle of blood."

The applause reached its crescendo. A stagehand pulled back the velvet curtain, gesturing frantically for Adrian to take the stage.

Adrian stood on the threshold between light and darkness. The teleprompter at the front of the stage glowed with his prepared speech praising his father’s legacy. In his coat pocket, Adrian’s thumb rested on the primary red touchscreen button of his smartphone—the switch that would instantly bypass the broadcast, release the murder confessions, and expose the entire conspiracy to the world.

If he pressed the button, the truth would be unleashed, but Clara and baby Leo might die before security could intervene.

If he read the speech, he would become the very monster he despised, cementing his father's crimes and surrendering his soul to Arthur Sterling forever.

Marissa gripped his forearm, her tears falling onto his sleeve, her eyes pleading with an agony that tore his heart in two.

Adrian took a deep breath, stepped out from behind the curtain, and walked into the blinding glare of the spotlights. He reached the podium. The crowd quieted. Adrian looked Arthur Sterling straight in the eye—and his finger pressed down firmly on the screen.

Then, behind the stage, a muffled gunshot echoed through the hall.
