Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Ambush

The seventy-fourth floor of Whitmore Tower hummed with high-voltage electricity and the chill of industrial cooling units. This was the technological heart of the conglomerate, home to the secondary broadcast switching hub that fed international news syndicates.
Adrian used his master keycard to bypass the biometric security lock on Server Room B. Inside, rows of black server racks flashed with thousands of rhythmic green and amber diodes.
"Here," Adrian said, setting the equipment case onto a metal workstation. He opened the latches, pulling out the custom laptop and connecting a high-speed fiber-optic patch cable directly into the building’s primary outbound trunk line.
Marissa stood guard by the heavy reinforced door, her ear pressed against the glass panel. "How long will it take to synchronize?"
"Four minutes to establish the Zurich handshake," Adrian said, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Once the link is live, I can trigger the override from my smartphone anywhere in the building with a single keystroke."
On the screen, lines of green code scrolled frantically:
*CONNECTING TO APEX_SATELLITE_NODE_04...*
*HANDSHAKE VERIFIED.*
*DATA INGEST: 100% COMPLETE.*
*BROADCAST OVERRIDE ARMED.*
"It's set," Adrian whispered, shutting the laptop lid and pocketing his encrypted mobile device. He turned to Marissa. "Now, you need to stay here. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except building emergency personnel after the broadcast goes live."
"No," Marissa said firmly, stepping away from the door. "Julian didn't die for me to hide in a server closet. I am coming with you to the auditorium."
"Marissa, if things go wrong, Sterling’s private security—"
"Sterling threatened to take my child, Adrian!" she cut him off, her brown eyes flashing with incandescent fury. "He looked me in the eye and told me my husband was a footnote in your father's biography. I want Sterling to look at me when his world comes crashing down."
Adrian saw the iron in her spine and knew there was no stopping her. "Then stay directly behind me."
They took the private service lift up to the eightieth floor. When the brass doors parted, the sounds of a bustling high-stakes media event washed over them. Over two hundred journalists, financial analysts, and corporate dignitaries filled the tiered auditorium. Huge digital banners bearing the Whitmore crest and the glowing blue logo of *PROJECT SOLSTICE* illuminated the stage.
At the front of the room, standing beside the podium in a pristine charcoal bespoke suit, was Arthur Sterling. He was laughing cordially with the senior vice president of the New York Stock Exchange.
As Adrian and Marissa stepped through the side curtains into the backstage staging area, Sterling’s head snapped toward them. The attorney’s smile vanished instantly. His pale eyes widened, darting from Adrian’s grim face down to Marissa Vance standing beside him.
Sterling whispered something to the security chief standing near the soundboard, then turned and strode briskly toward the wings, his face darkening with venomous fury.
"Adrian," Sterling hissed under his breath, cornering them behind the heavy velvet curtain. "What is this lunatic woman doing here? Have you completely lost your mind?"
Adrian looked down at the man who had poisoned his family, who had murdered his mother, and who had starved an innocent family without shedding a single tear.
"I found the French clock, Arthur," Adrian said, his voice deadly quiet. "And I found Ouroboros."

Sterling froze. The color drained from the elderly attorney’s face with terrifying speed, leaving him looking like an ancient, dried corpse beneath the stage lights. For the first time in his life, Arthur Sterling’s arrogant composure shattered into utter, paralyzed panic.
