Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Mercer Cabal

The arrest of Vance Mercer and Evelyn Ward sent shockwaves through Savannah’s aristocratic elite.

Within two hours, federal agents raided Vance’s downtown offices, seizing shipping manifests, offshore banking ledgers, and encrypted communications. By noon, the Georgia State Police had impounded seven freight vessels connected to the Mercer-Ward shipping syndicate, crippling Vance's criminal network permanently.

Dean Mercer did not stay to watch his cousin dragged through the courthouse lobby in chains.

He exited through the judges' private sally port, where his motorcade was waiting. In the back of the armored limousine, the tension that had gripped Dean’s soul for five months finally began to fracture.

Owen was resting in Grace’s lap, gurgling happily as he batted at the red plastic stethoscope Lily was dangling above his face.

"He likes my medical equipment," Lily declared proudly. "He wants to be an intern."

Grace chuckled, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear, but her gaze was soft as she looked across the seat at Dean.

Dean was staring out the tinted window at the Savannah riverfront. His hands were resting on his knees, no longer clenched into fists.

"It's over, Dean," Grace said gently, using his first name without thinking.

Dean turned his head. "The legal battle is over. The syndicate will be dismantled. I am liquidating all shipping assets connected to Vance and Evelyn. The ports will be transferred to a public trust held entirely in Owen’s name."

"And what about you?" Grace asked.

"I am resigning as chairman of the Mercer Enterprise board," Dean replied quietly. "Natalie died because I brought the streets into my living room. I spent five months hiding from my son because I thought I was keeping him safe from my darkness. But the danger wasn't outside the gates. The danger was allowing that world to dictate who I was allowed to love."

He looked down at Owen. The infant suddenly turned his head, his wide blue eyes locking onto Dean's face. Owen kicked his small legs, letting out a joyful, bubbling shriek, and reached his hands out toward his father.

Dean didn't hesitate. He leaned forward, gathered his son into his arms, and pulled him tight against his chest. Owen buried his face in Dean’s neck, his tiny fingers tangling into Dean’s silk tie.

Dean closed his eyes, his breath shuddering, breathing in the scent of baby powder, warm milk, and clean air. The heavy weight that had rested on his chest since the night Natalie died evaporated into the conditioned air of the car.

"His heart clock is steady," Lily observed, leaning over Dean’s knee to tap Dean’s chest with her fingers. "You're all cured, Mr. Dean."

Dean looked down at the little girl, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across his handsome features for the first time in years. "Thank you, Dr. Lily. What's the bill for your services?"

Lily tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Two ice creams. One for me, and one for Owen. But Owen can only have vanilla because he doesn't have teeth yet."

May you like

"Deal," Dean whispered.
