Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Well

By dusk, the Mercer estate was an armed fortress. Heavy black SUVs blocked the perimeter drives, floodlights cut through the weeping willows, and men in dark tactical gear patrolled the riverbanks with Belgian Malinois.

In the wine cellar beneath the east wing, where thick brick walls smothered any sound from reaching the upper floors, Dean sat on a metal folding chair.

Opposite him, tied to a heavy oak pillar, was Thomas, the gardener. His face was bruised, his green rubber boots sat in the corner of the room, and his hands were cuffed behind his back. Silas stood in the shadows, holding a heavy leather strap.

"I didn't mean to hurt him, Mr. Mercer! I swear to God!" Thomas sobbed, his voice cracking. "They told me he'd only be in the car for five minutes! They said they were calling the authorities right away!"

Dean leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Who gave you the key to the nursery service elevator?"

Thomas shook his head violently. "I don't know his name! It was a courier—he met me at the diner on Abercorn!"

Dean didn't raise his voice. He didn't shout. He spoke in a cold, measured whisper that made Thomas shudder. "You carried a five-month-old child out of his crib in a laundry hamper. You locked him inside a metal oven on a ninety-eight-degree day. Did you think about his mother, Thomas? Natalie used to pay for your mother’s dialysis."

Thomas broke, tears cutting streaks through the dirt on his cheeks. "It was Mr. Vance! Vance Mercer! He paid me twenty thousand dollars. He told me if I didn't do it, his crew would burn my mother’s trailer with her inside it! He said Mr. Dean didn't care about the baby anyway—that everyone knew Mr. Dean hated the sight of him!"

Silas stepped forward, his eyes burning with rage. "You disgust me."

"There's more," Dean said, his eyes narrowing. "How did you get Owen out of the nursery without Nurse Rachel screaming?"

Thomas swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Rachel... Rachel was on the phone in the pantry. She told me she had to take a private call from the agency. She knew, Mr. Dean. She didn't touch the baby, but she left the door unlocked on purpose."

Dean closed his eyes for three seconds. When he opened them, the last shred of human warmth had evaporated from his gaze.

"Silas," Dean said, standing up.

"Yes, boss?"

"Take Thomas to the basement holding cell at the docks. Keep him alive, hydrated, and untouched. He will be our state's witness."

"And Rachel Cole?"

"Bring her to the library," Dean said, straightening his cuffs. "I’ll handle her myself."

Five minutes later, Dean walked into the library. Rachel Cole was sitting near the cold fireplace, clutching a designer leather handbag that a nurse on sixty dollars an hour could never afford.

She stood up abruptly when Dean entered. "Mr. Mercer! Is Owen alright? I was just gathering my things—this whole ordeal has shaken me so terribly, I don't think I can continue my duties—"

Dean set a glass vial on the small table between them.

Rachel froze.

"This was recovered from Owen’s formula bottle in the nursery refrigerator twenty minutes ago," Dean said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Dr. Finch ran a rapid screen. Phenobarbital. A pediatric sedative. Just enough to keep him from crying while Thomas carried him through the halls in a basket. Just enough to ensure he wouldn't scream for help while the sun heated the car."

Rachel’s lips trembled. "Mr. Mercer... I don't—"

"The wire transfer into your offshore account cleared at seven-thirty this morning," Dean continued, pulling a printed ledger from his pocket and letting it flutter to the floor. "One hundred and fifty thousand dollars from an account linked to Evelyn Ward."

Rachel sank back onto the chair, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently.

"Natalie trusted you," Dean whispered, leaning over the woman until she could smell the ozone and iron clinging to his skin. "Natalie chose you before she died. She thought you would protect our son."

"They told me he wouldn't die!" Rachel screamed, looking up with wild, tear-streaked eyes. "Evelyn said she just wanted Owen safe! She said you were a monster—that you were going to raise him in the mob! She said she was taking him to Paris to raise him in the light!"

"My son is not a pawn in your socialite games," Dean said, standing tall. "You have two choices, Rachel. You can walk out those front gates right now, where two of Vance’s enforcers are waiting to put a bullet in your head to tie up loose ends... or you can sign a full confession, surrender your passport, and sit in my secure safehouse until the custody hearing tomorrow morning."

May you like

Rachel stared at him, horror dawning in her eyes as she realized the true nature of the Mercer family machine. "I'll sign," she sobbed. "I'll sign whatever you want."
