Chapter 9 - The Verdict of the Council

Don Carmine Lucchesi leaned forward, resting his heavy, ring-covered hands on the mahogany table.

"In our world," Don Carmine declared, his old eyes sweeping across the room, "we live by rules. We make money, we fight wars, and we protect our territories. But we never, ever insult the mothers, the elders, or the people who built our families from the ground up."

He glared directly at Salvatore Bellini.

"Your daughter offered cash to bribe Mama Rosa Alvarez—a woman who fed half the men in this room when we were boys coming up in the district," Don Carmine said, his voice rising in anger. "She threatened a maid who was doing her job with honesty. She showed that the Bellini family has forgotten what respect actually means."

"Don Carmine, please—" Salvatore began, his voice desperate.

"Silence!" Don Carmine snapped.

The old boss turned his gaze to Luca. "Luca Moretti. You were entirely within your rights to break the engagement. The Bellini family has no claim against your docks, your family, or your honor."

Don Carmine turned back to Salvatore.

"Furthermore," the senior boss commanded, "the Bellini Shipping Group will surrender twenty percent of its container leases at the Port of Chicago to the Moretti family as compensation for bringing this frivolous, disgraceful claim before the council."

Vanessa gasped in horror. "Father! You can't let them take our docks!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Salvatore roared, turning on his daughter with a look of pure rage. "You've ruined us!"

Luca stood up slowly from his chair. He looked at Salvatore Bellini, then down at Vanessa, who was fighting back tears of humiliation.

"The contract is null," Luca said softly. "The docks are mine. And if anyone from the Bellini family ever sets foot on my property or approaches Emma Reed or Rosa Alvarez again... the council won't need to convene to decide what happens next."

Luca turned around, offering his arms once again to Rosa and to me.

"Come, ladies," Luca said warmly. "Let's go home."

As we walked out of the council chamber, every boss at the table stood up—not for Luca, and not for the Bellinis. They stood up out of respect as Rosa Alvarez walked past them, her head held high, holding her worn leather purse like a crown jewel.
