Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of the Heart

I looked at the box, then up at Luca. "What's this?"

"Open it," Luca said.

I carefully unlatched the gold clasp and lifted the velvet lid. Inside sat a delicate gold necklace, holding a tear-drop pendant made of clear, polished amber. Inside the amber was a tiny, perfectly preserved pressed flower—a yellow sunflower.

"My mother loved sunflowers," Luca explained softly, his voice full of quiet emotion. "She planted them along the back garden wall when I was five years old. After she passed away, Rosa preserved one of the blossoms before the garden was remodeled."

Rosa smiled gently, nodding her head. "I kept it in my jewelry box for twenty-six years, waiting for the right person."

Luca looked directly into my eyes, his expression earnest, open, and deeply sincere.

"My mother wrote in her letter that I should choose a woman who sees the people in the shadows," Luca said, taking the necklace from the box and stepping closer to me. "For two years, you worked in this house, carrying your own heavy burdens, caring for your father, and doing your job with dignity and grace. And when the moment came, you risked everything you had to stand up for an old woman who could offer you nothing in return."

He gestured for me to turn around. I lifted my hair, feeling his warm, steady fingers lightly brush against my neck as he clasped the gold chain around my throat. The polished amber pendant rested perfectly against my collarbone.

"You brought light back into this house, Emma," Luca whispered near my ear. "And I don't ever want you to leave."

I turned back to face him, resting my hand against the warm amber pendant.

"I'm not going anywhere, Luca," I said softly, looking up into his eyes. "This is where I belong."

Rosa stood up from her chair, picking up her coffee cup with a happy, satisfied sigh.

"Well," Rosa announced with a wink, heading toward the garden doors. "Now that the estate is in good hands, I have to go to the kitchen. Luca’s capos are coming for lunch, and none of them know how to bake a proper apple pie."

Luca and I laughed as Rosa walked out into the bright morning sunshine, her laughter mingling with the soft breeze whispering through the blooming sunflowers in the garden.

Luca took my hand, his fingers weaving firmly through mine.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't standing in the shadows, waiting for someone to notice. I was standing in the sunlight, hand in hand with a man who had learned that the greatest strength in the world wasn't built on fear, power, or money—it was built on honor, loyalty, and love.
