Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Within two minutes, the quiet street was flooded with federal law enforcement vehicles, tactical SWAT teams, and emergency medical personnel. Flashbangs weren't necessary; the front door was wide open, and the predators were already broken on the floor.

Federal agents swarmed the foyer, disarming the unconscious gunman and zip-tying Julian, who was loaded onto a stretcher under heavy armed guard.

Sarah stood on the front lawn, wrapped in a gray wool blanket provided by a paramedic. Beside her, Ethan sat on the tailgate of an ambulance, an ice pack pressed against his bruised knuckles.

Upstairs, a female agent was gently carrying Lily down, wrapped in her favorite unicorn blanket. The little girl had slept through the worst of the chaos, only waking to the flashing lights of the police cars.

When Lily saw Ethan, she wriggled out of the agent’s arms and ran across the grass toward him.

Ethan flinched instinctively, shame washing over his face as he looked down at the grass, unable to meet her gaze. "Lily... don't. I hurt you."

Lily stopped in front of him. She looked at the red swelling on his face, at his bandaged hands, and then at the tears pooling in his eyes.

Slowly, without a word, she wrapped her small arms around his neck, burying her face into his shoulder.

"You saved me from the bad men," she whispered softly. "I heard you yelling at them, Ethan."

Ethan’s composure broke completely. He wrapped his arms around his little sister and sobbed into her hair, his shoulders heaving with the weight of months of terror, guilt, and exhaustion finally washing away.

Sarah walked over and placed her hands around both of them, pulling her children into a tight, unbroken circle. The nightmare was over. The debt was settled—not with money, but with truth.

Agent Miller walked over, holding an evidence bag containing the flash drive and the brass key.

"The ledger on this drive links Julian’s syndicate to thirty-two federal racketeering indictments," Miller said quietly, adjusting his glasses. "You and your children will be entered into the state protective transition program, but with Julian and his top lieutenants facing life sentences without parole, you won't have to look over your shoulder anymore."

Sarah looked at the agent, then down at Ethan and Lily. "We’re done running, Miller. We’re staying right here."
