Chapter 5 - The Shadow at the Gate

The realization hit Sarah like a physical blow. Her fifteen-year-old boy hadn't been morphing into a violent monster; he had been shouldering the weight of an executioner's blade alone, trying to keep a monster from gutting his family.

She closed the laptop, snatched the brass key and flash drive, and ran back upstairs.

This time, she did not wait. She turned the brass knob, found it locked, and kicked the latch with the heel of her boot until the wooden frame splintered open.

Ethan leaped out of bed, brandishing an iron desk lamp like a weapon. "I told you to—"

Sarah didn't argue. She stepped inside, closed the broken door behind her, and threw the steel thumb drive onto his bed.

Ethan froze. The lamp trembled in his hands, then lowered slowly. The defiant glare melted from his face, replaced by a ghastly, hollow paleness.

"I saw the files, Ethan," Sarah said softly, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "I saw the track footage. I saw the pictures of Lily."

Ethan’s lips quivered. He swallowed hard, trying to maintain his armor, but the tears leaked over his lashes, tracing silver lines down his cheeks. "They... they were going to take her, Mom. They said if I missed the handoff tonight, a car would hit her at the crosswalk on Monday morning."

"Who are they, Ethan?" Sarah took a gentle step forward, reaching out with both hands. "Tell me his name."

"His name is Julian," Ethan whispered, his knees buckling. He collapsed onto the edge of the mattress, burying his face in his hands. "He said Dad stole three million dollars from an overseas shell company before he vanished. Julian said since Dad isn't here to pay, I belong to him now. He’s been following me for months. He made me do dead-drops. He made me carry packages across town. And tonight was supposed to be the final delivery."

"Who was the courier at the party?"

"The guy who delivered the soda cases," Ethan wept, rocking back and forth. "He was waiting by the front porch. When Lily bumped into me and the cake fell... I saw him looking through the window. He smiled, Mom. He tapped his watch, walked to his car, and drove away. I lost my mind. I looked at Lily and all I could see was her getting hit by a car, and I... I couldn't stop my hands."

Sarah pulled him against her chest. Ethan resisted for half a second before breaking down entirely, wrapping his arms around her waist and sobbing into her sweater just as he had when he was a toddler.

"It’s over, Ethan," she whispered into his hair, her voice steel-wrapped velvet. "You are not fighting this alone anymore."

Suddenly, the streetlights outside flickered and shut off.

Downstairs, the heavy iron gate of the driveway creaked open in the wind.
