Chapter 7 - The Breach

The peace lasted exactly forty-eight hours.
On Thursday night, a blizzard hammered the shores of Lake Michigan, howling like a chorus of dying men. Under cover of the storm, Silvio Moretti made his move.
The estate's perimeter alarm tripped at 3:14 AM.
Three black utility vans rammed through the outer iron gates, discharging twelve heavily armed mercenaries equipped with thermal scopes and automatic rifles. They didn't want a negotiation; Dante had orders to raze the house and take the boy as a bargaining chip for the southern docks.
The sound of shattering glass and heavy gunfire echoed through the lower corridors.
I was out of bed instantly, racking the slide of an assault rifle. I threw open the door to the east wing.
Linda was already standing over Keo, shielding him with her body, clutching a kitchen knife she must have smuggled from the pantry. Keo was crying, trembling under the blankets as the house shook with muzzle blasts.
"Stay down!" I commanded, slamming the reinforced titanium door shut and locking the electronic deadbolts. "Marco is in the hallway. No one enters this room."
"Lorenzo, please!" Linda cried, terror gripping her face. "They're here for us!"
"They're here to die," I replied, my voice devoid of humanity.
I stepped out into the corridor, sealing the blast door behind me.
The hallway smelled of ozone, cordite, and copper. Two of Dante’s men came rushing around the marble rotunda, their weapons raised.
I fired without hesitation. Two controlled bursts dropped the first man. The second took cover behind a Roman bust, spraying drywall into the air. I closed the distance with cold, methodical precision, flanking him and driving my combat knife through his tactical vest before he could reload.
Downstairs, the battle was brief and merciless. My men had prepared for this ambush. Within six minutes, eleven of Dante’s mercenaries lay dead on the blood-soaked parquet floors.

Only Dante survived, pinned to the floor by Marco’s boot, bleeding from a shattered shoulder.
