Chapter 5 - Shelter in the Fortress

At 2:00 AM, the reinforced black SUV carrying Linda and Keo pulled into the underground garage of my Lakeview fortress.

The boy was asleep, bundled in blankets, an intravenous line secured under his sleeve. My private medical team immediately transferred him to the newly retrofitted east wing—a suite that had been converted within twelve hours into a sterile, state-of-the-art clinic.

Linda stepped out into the cold concrete garage, looking around at the armed guards stationed every ten yards with submachine guns slung across their chests. Her face was pale, but there was no panic in her eyes now—only the steely resolve of a mother who had crossed into a war zone to save her child.

"Is he safe here, Lorenzo?" she asked, using my first name for the first time.

"Nothing gets inside these walls unless I invite it," I replied, walking beside her up the marble staircase. "Silvio Moretti is hunting for my pressure points. He believes you and Keo are my soft underbelly."

Linda stopped on the landing, looking up at me. "Are we?"

The question hung in the vast, shadowed foyer like an unexploded shell.

"I don't have weaknesses, Linda," I said coldly, trying to convince myself as much as her. "I have assets, and I have liabilities. Your son is under my protection. An attack on him is an attack on my sovereignty."

"You're lying," she said softly, reaching out and gently touching my forearm. Her touch was warm against the black wool of my coat. "You didn't spend a fortune and bring an army to defend an asset. You did it because beneath all that blood and iron, you couldn't bear to let an innocent child die alone."

I looked down at her small hand, feeling a dangerous thaw creeping through the frozen wasteland of my conscience.

"Get some rest, Linda," I murmured, turning away before she could see the crack in my armor. "Tomorrow, the city burns."
