Chapter 2 - An Offer from the Shadows

Linda collapsed onto the vinyl visitor's chair, burying her face in her hands. The shock robbed her of breath. For months, she had carried the crushing burden of Keo’s illness in total silence, scrubbing the dried blood of my enemies from the limestone tiles of my entryway while calculating how many days of life her meager hourly wage could buy.

"Why?" she whispered, looking up through tear-stained lashes. "You don't do charity, Mr. Gallo. Everyone in Cook County knows who you are. What do you want from me?"

"You've worked in my home for six months," I said, leaning against the radiator. "You've walked past unlocked safes, confidential ledgers, and firearms left on my mahogany desk. You never touched a single dollar that wasn't yours. You never asked for pity. You worked until your palms blistered."

I took a step toward her. She didn't shrink away this time, though every nerve in her body screamed of tension.

"Loyalty is the only currency worth anything in my world," I continued. "You didn't sell my secrets to the Moretti family to pay for his chemo. That makes your son my responsibility now."

Before she could respond, the door clicked open. A chief administrator strode in, flanked by two armed private security guards and a senior oncologist clutching a freshly printed tablet. The administrator was sweating despite the chill outside.

"Mr. Gallo," the man stammered, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "We... we received the wire confirmation from your estate's foundation. We had no idea young Mateo was under your personal patronage. Dr. Vance has already been dispatched via private transport. We are prepping the pediatric ICU for immediate transfer."

Linda watched them in disbelief. An hour ago, these same bureaucrats had spoken to her like she was vermin clogging their hallway. Now, they bowed their heads before the shadow of my name.

"I want private security outside his door around the clock," I told the administrator, my voice cutting like cold steel. "No one enters without my personal authorization. If a single nurse without top-tier clearance approaches this boy, I will hold you personally accountable. Am I clear?"

"Crystal clear, sir."

The staff bustled into motion, attaching new monitors and preparing the boy's gurney. Linda stood motionless amidst the flurry of white coats, her gaze locked onto me.

"Pack his things, Linda," I said, turning toward the doorway. "Your shift at the estate is over. From tonight, you don't leave his side."

"Mr. Gallo, wait," she called out, running to the threshold. "How do I repay you? I could work for the rest of my life and never cover half a million dollars."

May you like

I paused, looking back over my tailored shoulder. "Pray he survives. That is the only payment I require."
