Chapter 4 - The Motive Behind the Madness

"Why?" Ethan asked.
The single word didn't carry rage. It carried a hollow, crushed tone—the sound of a man watching his entire life, his choices, and his trust crumble into fine powder.
He stood up from the desk, his hands hanging limp at his sides. He walked toward the doorway where Sophia stood huddled against the brick wall.
"Why, Sophia?" he asked again, his voice rising slightly. "My father opened his home to us. He let us live here while our house was being renovated. He welcomed you into this family when everyone else said we were moving too fast. Why did you do this?"
Sophia backed away up two stairs, her knuckles white as she gripped the wooden handrail.
"Ethan... please," she sobbed, but the tears were real now—tears of caught, panicked despair. "You don't understand... you don't know what he was going to do—"
"I know what I just saw on that screen!" Ethan roared, the fury finally bursting through his paralysis. "I saw my wife frame my seventy-five-year-old father for an assault he never committed! I saw you tear your own clothes off to make me hit my own dad!"
"He was going to cut you out!" Sophia screamed back, her composure completely shattering as she stood on the staircase, looking down at him. "He was going to strip your inheritance! I overheard him talking to the estate attorney on Tuesday!"
Richard sat up in his leather chair, lowering the ice pack from his swollen jaw. "I was modifying the corporate trust structure to protect the estate from third-party liabilities, Sophia. I was not cutting Ethan out."
"You were putting the entire estate into an irrevocable management trust controlled by a board of trustees!" Sophia yelled, pointing a trembling finger down at the old man. "You were taking away Ethan’s direct voting control! You were making it so he couldn't touch the principal capital without three signatures!"
Ethan stared at her in complete astonishment. "You did all this... because of the trust structure?"
"It’s fifty million dollars, Ethan!" Sophia cried out, her voice echoing down the stairwell. "Fifty million dollars! We’ve been married for five years! I’ve put up with your family’s judgment, your sister’s condescension, your father’s quiet control! If he puts that money in a managed trust, we get an allowance! An allowance, Ethan! Like children!"
"And framing my father for a crime was your solution?" Ethan asked, taking a step up the stairs toward her. "You thought if you accused him of assaulting you, what would happen?"
"If he were charged with a felony," Sophia whispered, her voice dropping to a dark, desperate tremble, "he would be forced to step down as sole executor of the Whitmore estate immediately. The secondary executor named in the 2019 charter... was you. You would have had full power of attorney by the end of the week."
Clara let out a loud, horrified gasp from the corner of the room. "You calculated the whole thing... You wanted him arrested so Ethan could take over the estate."
Sophia didn't deny it. She pressed her back against the stairwell wall, breathing heavily, looking down at the three people she had tried to manipulate.
Ethan looked at her as if looking at a total stranger.
"I didn't care about the board of trustees, Sophia," Ethan said quietly. "I never asked for full control of the estate. I told my father months ago that I wanted him to structure it however he felt was best for the family’s longevity."
Sophia blinked, her eyes darting between Ethan and Richard. "What...?"
"You didn't ask me," Ethan said, his voice cracking with emotion. "You never talked to me. You assumed everyone operated with the same poisonous greed that you do."
He turned away from her, turning his back on her entirely as he walked toward his father.

"Ethan, wait!" Sophia begged, taking two steps down. "Ethan, I did it for us! I did it for our future!"
"Don't say 'us'," Ethan said without turning around. "There is no 'us' anymore."
