Chapter 3 - The Unvarnished Reel

The basement study smelled of cold leather, pipe tobacco, and old paper. It was a room Ethan had known since childhood—a sanctuary where his father had spent decades managing the family’s real estate holdings and philanthropic trusts.
Now, it felt like an interrogation chamber.
Ethan stood behind the heavy mahogany desk, his fingers hovering over the glowing mechanical keyboard of the main server terminal. Richard sat quietly in the leather armchair near the fireplace, holding an ice pack against his swollen jaw. Clara stood near the door, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist, her face fixed in a mask of anxious dread.
Sophia stood near the bottom of the basement stairs. She hadn't been invited down, but she had followed them like a ghost, unable to remain upstairs while her fate was being reviewed frame by frame. She stood in the shadow of the doorway, clutching a dark wool cardigan over her ruined blouse.
"I’m accessing the library camera feed," Ethan said, his voice cold and raspy.
He tapped the key. The high-resolution monitor flickered, displaying a four-grid camera view of the estate. He clicked on the top-right quad, expanding the library view to fill the entire twenty-seven-inch screen.
He dragged the timeline slider back to 2:14 p.m.
"There," Clara whispered, leaning forward over Ethan’s shoulder.
On the screen, the library was quiet. The wide-angle lens captured the wide mahogany desk, the Persian rug, and the high double doors leading to the hallway.
At 2:15 p.m., Sophia walked into the frame.
Ethan felt a cold knot form in his throat as he watched his wife. On the silent video, she looked entirely composed. She wasn't frightened; she wasn't fleeing. She walked directly to the desk, opened the top left drawer, and pulled out a leather-bound financial ledger—the Whitmore Family Private Trust file.
She flipped through the pages rapidly, holding up her smartphone to take several quick photographs of the account balance sheets.
"She was taking pictures of the trust ledger," Ethan murmured, his heart hammering against his ribs.
Then, at 2:18 p.m., the library doors swung open on the screen. Richard entered the room, carrying a stack of mail.
The video had clear audio. Ethan clicked the volume toggle, increasing the speaker output.
“Sophia?” Richard’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the basement speakers. “What are you doing in my private files?”
On the screen, Sophia jumped, instantly closing the ledger and sliding her phone into her pocket. Her face on the high-definition footage transformed instantly—from cool calculation to defensive hostility.
“I’m looking for the property distribution annex, Richard,” her recorded voice replied sharply. “Ethan said I had full access to the family accounts.”
“Ethan does not have the authority to grant access to the irrevocable trust documents without a board meeting,” Richard replied on screen, his voice calm, measured, and completely non-threatening. He set the mail on the corner of the table and stood five feet away. “You know those documents are strictly confidential until the annual review.”
“I am Ethan’s wife!” Sophia shouted on the screen, stepping closer to Richard, her finger thrust into his chest area, though Richard stepped backward to maintain distance. “I have every right to know what my husband is entitled to!”
“You have no right to breach my private office, Sophia,” Richard said calmly on the video. “I think you should return to your room.”
Then came the moment that made Ethan’s breath stop entirely.
On the monitor, Sophia’s face shifted. A look of terrifying, cold calculation crossed her features. She looked toward the hallway doors, then turned back to Richard.
She stepped backward three feet—putting distance between herself and the 75-year-old man.
Then, with deliberate, forceful movements, she reached up with both hands, grabbed her hair, and violently mussed it up. She reached down to the placket of her silk blouse, hooked her fingers around the delicate buttons, and yanked sideways. The fabric tore with a loud snap on the audio track. The pearl buttons bounced across the rug.
Richard stood frozen on the screen, his mouth slightly open in utter disbelief.
“Sophia… what are you doing?” his recorded voice asked.
Sophia backed up into the desk corner, wrapped her arms around her chest, threw her head back, and screamed at the top of her lungs: “HELP! GET AWAY FROM ME!”
The video showed Ethan bursting through the double doors three seconds later. It showed Ethan striding across the room without looking left or right. It showed Ethan raising his right hand and striking his father across the face.
The video played out to the end—showing Richard standing in silence, raising his hand, and pointing at the camera.
Ethan sat back in the leather chair.
The basement was dead silent except for the low hum of the cooling fans inside the computer tower.

Ethan turned his head very slowly toward the doorway.
Sophia was shrinking into the shadows, her eyes wide with horror, her mouth trembling as she looked at the glowing screen that had just laid her soul bare before her husband.
