Chapter 7 - The Emergency Triage

Richard buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, ragged sobs. The myth of his golden daughter, the pride that had sustained him through decades of grueling commercial competition, had shattered into dust in less than an hour.
"Harold," I said, addressing the senior construction director. My voice immediately broke the paralyzed silence. "Pull every project manager together in the fourteenth-floor conference room within fifteen minutes."
Harold looked up, startled by the commanding authority in my tone. "Emily... the payroll. If the union doesn't get guarantees by noon, they walk."
"The union will get their guarantees," I said firmly, opening Tab E of my binder. "Martin, initiate the immediate freeze on Vanessa’s domestic luxury accounts under the emergency attachment order we secured at 6:30 AM. That recaptures approximately $1.1 million currently held in her liquid brokerage fund."
Martin nodded, tapping rapidly on his tablet. "Consider it executed."
"Next," I turned to the board, "Julian Voss was intercepted at the ground-floor turnstile by building security two minutes ago. The laptop in his possession contains the private decryption keys for the Banque Privée transfers. We have already notified the Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The funds in Zurich are under a provisional international hold."
Richard looked up from his hands, his eyes bloodshot, his voice trembling. "Emily... how did you... how did you manage all of this before nine in the morning?"
"Because while you were celebrating her illusions last night, Dad, I was doing what I’ve done every day of my professional life," I said without malice. "I analyzed the structural vulnerabilities and built a containment perimeter. We have enough unencumbered collateral in our commercial warehouse division to secure an emergency letter of credit from Metropolitan Reserve Bank by 11:00 AM."
"They won't issue it to me," Richard whispered bitterly. "Not with these fraud allegations. The bank will smell blood and pull the plug."
"They won't issue it to you, Dad," I agreed. "And they certainly won't issue it to Vanessa. But they will issue it to me."
I reached into my briefcase and drew out a signed, notarized certification from the State Forensic Audit Licensing Board, accompanied by a letter of credit guarantee from my own private auditing partnership.
"For eight years, Bellamy Development’s creditors have used my forensic firm to verify other developers' risk profiles," I stated. "They trust my signature because it has never once appeared on a fraudulent document. If the board votes right now to appoint me interim Executive Trustee with full, uninhibited operational authority, I will sign the debt stabilization protocol."
The board members didn't even hesitate.
Harold Vance raised his right hand instantly. "I move to appoint Emily Bellamy as Executive Trustee with absolute authority over all corporate accounts and restructuring protocols."
"Seconded," called out Director Marcus from the far end.
"All in favor?" Martin Cole called out.
Every hand at the table went up into the air.
Richard looked around the room. The men and women who had built his company with him were no longer looking to him for salvation. They were looking at the daughter he had dismissed as a boring, unremarkable number-cruncher.
With a slow, agonizing nod of his head, Richard Bellamy raised his trembling right hand.

"Motion carried," Martin recorded. "Emily Bellamy is now the presiding executive authority of Bellamy Development."
