Chapter 6 - The Broken Altar

"Do not touch me!" Vanessa screeched, retreating backward into the boardroom like a cornered cat. "Do you know who I am? I am Vanessa Bellamy! My father built half the skyline of this city! Dad! Tell them! Tell them to arrest Emily! She fabricated the files! She’s the one who brought this disgrace upon us!"

Richard sat utterly motionless.

It was the first time in thirty-four years that Richard Bellamy did not step between Vanessa and the consequences of her actions. His eyes were fixed on the black binders, on the cold, undeniable ledger columns where his name and his honor had been bartered away for private jets, luxury villas, and cheap vanity.

"Dad?" Vanessa’s voice finally lost its razor-sharp arrogance, degenerating into a pathetic whimper. "Daddy... please. Tell them it’s a family misunderstanding. We can pay the money back. We can take out a mortgage on the lake house. Daddy, look at me!"

Richard slowly raised his head. His eyes were sunken, swimming with tears of profound humiliation and heartbreak.

"The lake house... is already mortgaged, Vanessa," Richard said, his voice cracking like dry wood. "I remortgaged it two years ago... to fund your initial project development startup. The company you told me was turning an eighty-percent margin."

Vanessa’s mouth opened and closed silently.

"You lied to me," Richard whispered, the realization settling into his soul with crushing weight. "Every expansion report... every glowing investor summary... every time you kissed my cheek and told me we were conquering the market... it was all a theater."

"Daddy, I did it for us!" she pleaded, tears cutting tracks through her heavy makeup. "I wanted to prove that I could make Bellamy bigger than you ever did! I wanted people to see me as an empire builder!"

"No," I said, stepping between her and our father. "You didn't do it for him. You did it because you are an empty, narcissistic sociopath who believes rules are only meant for ordinary people. You mocked my work. You treated everyone who actually worked for a living like dirt under your heels. You pushed an injured sister into a pool because you couldn't stand three minutes where the attention wasn't on your triumphant coronation."

"I hate you," Vanessa whispered, her teeth bared in an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. "I have always hated you."

"I know," I replied calmly. "The difference is, your hatred made you reckless. My indifference made me thorough."

The state troopers entered the boardroom, clicking metal handcuffs from their utility belts. Vanessa pulled away, kicking and screaming, knocking over a crystal presentation stand as they seized her wrists and pinned her arms behind her back.

"Richard Bellamy, save me!" she screamed as she was hauled through the double doors, her cries echoing down the marble halls of the executive floor. "Daddy! You can't let them take me! Emily, you ruined my life! You ruined everything!"

The sound of her hysterics slowly faded as the elevator doors closed in the distance.

Silence fell over the boardroom—heavy, suffocating, and absolute. The remaining directors looked down at their papers, unable to meet the gaze of the broken old man sitting at the head of the table.
