Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Gathering

The flagship headquarters of Bellamy Development occupied the top two floors of the monolithic glass tower overlooking the metropolitan harbor. At 8:30 AM, the atmosphere inside the executive suite was festive. Colorful floral arrangements lined the marble reception desk, congratulatory telegrams sat on silver trays, and a catered buffet had been arranged for the senior partners.
Vanessa arrived at quarter to nine, wearing an ivory crepe sheath dress that looked straight off a Milan runway. Her hair was styled in immaculate waves, her makeup flawless, her posture radiating triumphant certainty. Walking beside her was Julian Sterling, wearing an unstructured cashmere blazer and sporting an easy, patronizing smile.
"Good morning, everyone!" Vanessa’s voice rang out across the open floor, melodic and authoritative. "Please, help yourselves to the mimosas. Today isn’t just about my father’s retirement; it’s about the launch of Bellamy Global. Julian and I will be unveiling our Mediterranean acquisition strategy during the 9:30 executive session."
Richard Bellamy stepped out of his corner office, wearing his custom navy bespoke suit. He looked tired, the years of heavy corporate responsibility etched deeply into the lines around his eyes, but his expression softened into a look of proud indulgence the moment he saw Vanessa.
"There she is," Richard said, opening his arms to embrace her. "The next Chief Executive Officer of Bellamy Development."
"Thank you, Daddy," Vanessa purred, kissing both his cheeks before turning her head slightly toward Julian. "You remember Julian, of course. He’s already negotiated the initial framework for our expansion into the luxury villa market in Monaco."
"Splendid, splendid," Richard said, shaking Julian’s hand warmly. "A fresh perspective is exactly what we need. The domestic property market is slowing down; we need bold vision."
The heavy glass doors of the executive suite slid open.
The room fell abruptly silent.
I stepped into the lobby, Martin Cole walking a half-step behind me. In his left hand, Martin carried a thick leather brief pack. My right arm was held tightly against my ribcage by the dark sling, but my back was ramrod straight. I wore minimal makeup, my hair pulled back into a severe, professional chignon, my gaze fixed directly on Vanessa.
Vanessa’s smile froze for a microsecond before morphing into an expression of theatrical pity. She let out a loud, delicate sigh that carried across the entire executive floor.
"Oh, Emily," Vanessa said, shaking her head as she took two steps toward me. "Look at you. Did you really need to bring that ridiculous medical sling to the office? You are still playing the victim over a little splash of water? It was a party prank. Daddy told you last night: stop making everything about yourself."
Several junior project directors looked down at their coffee cups, visibly uncomfortable.
Richard frowned, stepping forward with his hands raised in appeasement. "Emily, what are you doing here? Today is the formal leadership transition. You have your own consulting firm. You know this meeting is strictly reserved for the executive board and our senior equity stakeholders."
"I am here in my capacity as an independent forensic auditor retained under Section 4-B of the Bellamy Corporate Charter," I said, my voice cutting through the lobby with pristine acoustic clarity. "A provision that allows the legal counsel of this firm to initiate an emergency financial review whenever material discrepancies threaten corporate solvency."
Julian let out a short, aristocratic chuckle. "Forensic auditor? Richard, I thought you said your other daughter worked as a bookkeeper. Darling, this is a board transition, not an internal petty-cash audit."
I didn't even look at him. My eyes remained locked on Vanessa’s face. "The meeting will convene in the main boardroom immediately. Martin, distribute the initial dockets."
Martin stepped forward, ignoring Vanessa completely, and walked toward the primary boardroom doors. "Senior directors, please take your seats. Mr. Bellamy, as corporate counsel, I am advising you that failure to attend this briefing creates immediate personal fiduciary liability under state securities statutes."
Richard’s face paled slightly. The legal terminology broke through his celebratory haze. "Martin... what are you talking about?"

"Come inside, Dad," I said quietly, walking past Vanessa without brushing against her. "Let’s look at what your bold vision actually bought."
