Chương 7 - The Downward Spiral

Julian fell to his knees on the dark basalt floor.
He didn't care about the security guards. He didn't care about his mother’s frantic, incoherent sobbing. He crawled forward two feet, reaching out with trembling, desperate hands toward the petrified wood table.
"Clara... please," he wept, tears finally spilling down his cheeks, mixing with the cold sweat of total ruin. "I love you. You know I loved you. I made a mistake, I was stupid, I was under so much pressure from the board! The debt was killing me, I wasn't thinking straight! Don't do this to me. We can fix this. We can annul the marriage, we can start over, I'll sign whatever you want!"
Clara stood up.
She walked slowly around the length of the table, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She stopped three feet from where Julian knelt in the dirt of his own making.
She looked down at him. There was no hatred in her eyes. Hatred was an active emotion; it implied that the other person still held some value, some power to provoke warmth or fire.
Her eyes held only the vast, freezing emptiness of an ocean trench.
"You don't love me, Julian," she said softly. "You loved the idea of a girl you could diminish so you could feel large. You loved having a quiet, obedient wife who would never question your genius, never challenge your lies, and absorb your family's cruelty without complaint."
She crouched down, bringing her face level with his.
She pointed a single, elegant finger to the butterfly closures on her cheekbone.
"Do you know what this feels like, Julian?" she whispered. "It feels like a clean break. It feels like thirty-four million dollars well spent."
"Clara..." Julian choked out.
"Sterling Innovations will enter Chapter 7 liquidation by five o'clock today," Clara stated, her voice dropping into an inescapable, final rhythm. "Vanguard will acquire your patents for pennies on the dollar at the bankruptcy auction. We will dismantle your core infrastructure, rebrand the data protocols under our proprietary defense contracts, and wipe your name from every line of code."
She stood back up to her full height, looking down on him as if he were an oil stain on the driveway.
"You will leave this building with nothing. No equity. No company. No reputation. By tomorrow morning, your name will be an industry punchline. The founder who sold his future for a laugh over a wedding cake."
Julian buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with violent, pathetic sobs.
Beatrice stood frozen, her eyes wide and glassy, completely detached from reality. "I am a Sterling," she muttered to the empty air, her voice cracked and wandering. "I was on the board of the Metropolitan Opera... you can't take my jewelry... you can't touch my pearls..."
"The pearls were purchased with funds drawn from your son’s secondary revolving credit line, Mrs. Sterling," Bennett noted from the table, not even glancing at her. "They are classified as proceeds of fraudulent conveyance. A marshal is waiting outside your hotel suite to collect them."
Arthur Vance rose from his seat.
He adjusted his cufflinks, walked over to Clara, and placed a gentle, protective hand on her shoulder.
"We are done here, Richard," Arthur said quietly. "Call the federal marshals to clear the room. I have an operating board meeting at four."
"Right away, Mr. Vance."
Clara took one last look at Julian, curled into a pathetic ball on the floor of the 88th floor, weeping into his tailored suit.

She felt nothing. No regret. No lingering sorrow. Only the absolute, untouchable peace of a debt fully collected.
