Chương 6 - Unmasking the Vanguard

Julian rushed forward, catching his mother by the shoulder and dragging her back. His face was slick with sweat, his eyes darting frantically between Arthur and Clara.

"Clara... please," Julian stammered, his arrogance completely evaporating into a desperate, groveling whine. "Look at me. It’s Julian. Your husband."

"You are not my husband," Clara replied, her tone completely devoid of emotion. "You are an unsecured debtor facing catastrophic liquidation."

"Clara, the wedding was a misunderstanding!" Julian pleaded, taking another step forward before a security guard laid a heavy, warning hand on his chest. "The cake... it was a joke! A bad joke! My mother has an old-fashioned sense of humor, she didn't mean to hurt you! I was drunk, I didn't realize how bad the cut was—"

"You toasted the blood, Julian," Clara said, leaning forward slightly, resting her elbows on the dark wood. "You raised your glass and told two hundred and fifty-six people that my bleeding was good luck for your harvest."

She tilted her head, letting the cold afternoon light catch the butterfly closures on her torn cheek.

"Well," she whispered. "The harvest has arrived."

Arthur Vance closed his leather folder with a soft *thud*.

"Let us review the balance sheet of Sterling Innovations," Arthur said, his voice deep, resonant, and entirely calm. "As of 8:00 AM today, your operational liabilities stand at fifty-two million dollars. Your convertible debt notes—purchased by Vanguard through our secondary acquisition vehicle, Obsidian Crest—matured at noon following your technical default on the Apex Meridian bridge facility."

Arthur looked Julian dead in the eye.

"You owe my firm thirty-four million, two hundred and eighty thousand dollars. In liquid funds. Immediately."

"I... I can raise it," Julian lied, his voice cracking. "I have investors. SoftBank, Sequoia, they know our platform—"

"They know your platform is currently dark," Richard Bennett interrupted, sliding an iPad across the table toward Julian. "Amazon Web Services severed your hosting clusters two hours ago. Furthermore, three whistleblowers from your data architecture division arrived at the SEC's regional office forty-five minutes ago, carrying the unencrypted source code that proves Sterling Innovations was selling user metadata to unsanctioned foreign entities."

Julian’s knees literally buckled. He caught himself on the edge of a chair, his face turning a sickly shade of green. "How... how did you get that?"

"I lived in your apartment for a year and a half, Julian," Clara said coldly. "You left your administrative tokens on the kitchen counter while you bragged to your friends about your imaginary net worth. You thought I was an uneducated girl from Queens who spent her time looking at recipe blogs. You never once asked me what I studied."

She paused, a ghost of an icy smile touching her lips.

"I hold a dual master's degree in quantitative economics and computational cryptography from MIT. I understood your system architecture better than you did. And I know precisely where you hid the offshore routing logs."

Beatrice lunged forward, her voice a screeching wail. "You deceitful little snake! You spied on my son? You wormed your way into his bed to destroy his life?"

"Beatrice," Clara said, her gaze turning to the older woman like the barrel of a loaded shotgun. "You spent two years reminding me that I came from the dirt. You made my mother sit by the kitchen garbage at my own wedding. You took thirty thousand dollars of my father’s money for a gown and had your seamstress deliberately misalign the hem so I would look clumsy on the dance floor."

Clara leaned back, crossing her legs.

"You wanted to know my family's pedigree? Vanguard Holdings owns sixty percent of the commercial real estate on the street where you get your hair dyed. We own the bridge loans that built your country club. We own the private equity fund that holds the deed to your home in Southampton."

Clara glanced at Bennett. "Richard, what is the status of the Southampton property?"

"Foreclosure papers were served to the caretaker twenty minutes ago, Ms. Vance," Bennett said smoothly. "The locks are currently being changed. Mrs. Sterling’s personal property is being inventoried for federal auction to satisfy the margin call on her son’s personal indemnity guarantees."

Beatrice gasped, clutching her throat as if she were suffocating. "My home... my family's estate..."

May you like

"It’s not your estate anymore, Beatrice," Clara said. "It’s our warehouse."
