Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The panic inside the room was almost suffocating. Kimberly was on her feet now, her smug demeanor completely shattered. “Wait! What about my trust fund? What about Meline’s private school tuition? Grandma, you can't just cut us off over a Christmas argument!”

Arthur Vance closed his briefcase with a sharp, definitive click. “All educational endowments and family stipends originated from the Vance Foundation discretionary account. Pursuant to Mrs. Holloway’s newly registered directives, those stipends have been terminated immediately.”

Gerald collapsed onto the sofa, burying his face in his hands. The myth of his self-made prestige had evaporated in less than ten minutes. The grand house, the country club memberships, the luxury vehicles leased through the corporate trust—none of it was his.

“You have thirty days to vacate this property, Gerald,” Arthur added, handing a formal eviction notice to Janice. “The house has been deeded into an irrevocable educational trust for Fiona Holloway. When she turns twenty-one, she may decide whether to sell it or demolish it.”

Janice looked down at the eviction paper, then at Samuel, her eyes wide with desperate pleading. She rushed across the room, reaching out to grab Samuel’s jacket sleeve.

“Samuel! Talk to her!” Janice wailed, tears of genuine panic smearing her eyeliner. “You’re my son! You can’t let your father and mother end up on the street! Tell your grandmother this has gone too far! We’re family!”

Samuel looked down at his mother’s trembling hands. For years, those hands had dispensed conditional affection, passive-aggressive critiques, and cold manipulation.

He gently, deliberately removed her fingers from his coat.

“On Christmas Eve, you looked my eight-year-old daughter in the eye and told her she didn't belong in this family,” Samuel said, his voice quiet and unbreakable. “You were right about one thing, Janice. Someone in this room doesn’t belong. But it isn't Fiona.”

Samuel turned his back on them, offering his arm to his grandmother. Agnes took it with a proud, serene smile, letting her grandson lead her toward the double doors.
