Chapter 6 - The Uncomfortable Revelation

Four days later, on New Year’s Eve, the courier delivered the medical portfolio directly to Arthur Vance’s chambers. Samuel and I sat across the wide desk as the attorney flipped through twelve pages of dense genetic data, probability curves, and notarized state seals.

“As expected,” Arthur murmured with professional satisfaction. “Paternity confirmation between Samuel and Fiona is 99.9997%. Statistically indisputable biological parentage. The genetic matches across the autosomal markers rule out any other possibility in the human population.”

I closed my eyes, letting out a breath of immense relief. I had never doubted my child’s paternity for a single second, but seeing the undeniable stamp of scientific finality felt like armor against the poison Janice had spewed.

“However,” Arthur continued, his brow furrowing as he turned to the third appendix of the laboratory report, “the comparative genetic analysis between Samuel and Agnes yielded something unprecedented.”

Samuel sat upright. “What do you mean? Is there an anomaly with my grandmother?”

Arthur cleared his throat, glancing toward the door before lowering his voice. “When Agnes asked for a complete three-generation lineage sweep, the laboratory ran Gerald’s archival blood work on file from his medical power-of-attorney documentation last year. Samuel… your father Gerald is not Agnes’s biological son.”

The room went dead silent. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like hammer blows.

“What did you just say?” Samuel breathed.

“Agnes’s late husband, Charles Holloway, had a brief indiscretion sixty-two years ago,” Arthur explained quietly. “To avoid a catastrophic scandal within high society, Agnes agreed to raise the infant Gerald as her own son. But she never legally adopted him through the state courts, nor did Charles amend the foundational Vance Family Trust, which explicitly restricts legacy inheritance to Agnes’s direct biological descendants.”

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity.

“Gerald never knew,” Samuel whispered, shock rippling across his face. “He went his entire life believing he was the sole master of the Holloway fortune.”

“Janice spent thirty years scheming to inherit an empire,” Arthur added with a grim smirk, “that her husband never legally belonged to in the first place.”
