Chapter 8 - The Paper Trap

Janice immediately stood up, smoothing her designer silk blouse and plastering on her rehearsed, syrupy smile. “Agnes, darling, you shouldn't have braved the winter chill. Samuel has been terribly difficult about the whole situation. We were merely trying to protect the integrity of the estate for Meline and future generations.”

“Were you, Janice?” Agnes asked, taking a seat on the central sofa while Arthur Vance stood beside her like an executioner in a pinstripe suit. “How exceptionally thoughtful of you.”

Kimberly crossed her legs, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Grandma, Samuel walked out on Christmas like an entitled baby just because Dad asked for a routine test. He’s obviously hiding something.”

Gerald nodded gravely, leaning over Agnes’s shoulder. “I hate to say it, Mother, but we must protect the family legacy. If Samuel refuses to verify Fiona’s paternity, I am prepared to sign the papers disinheriting his entire branch from the estate. It pains me, but discipline is necessary.”

“You are prepared to disinherit him?” Agnes repeated, her voice dripping with crystalline irony. “On what authority, Gerald?”

“On my authority as the head of this family,” Gerald stated, puffing out his chest. “The Holloway holdings, the trust accounts, this very house—everything Charles established passes through me. I’ve tolerated Samuel’s insubordination long enough.”

Janice looked down at me, her eyes gleaming with triumphant spite. “You see, dear? Actions have consequences. If you had simply handed over the swab on Christmas Eve, we might have been generous. But you chose rebellion. Now your daughter gets nothing.”

I stood beside Samuel, feeling neither fear nor anger—only a profound, pitying disgust.

“Arthur,” Agnes said softly, resting both hands on her cane. “Would you kindly explain to my son and daughter-in-law who actually owns the roof over their heads?”

Arthur Vance unzipped his leather satchel and extracted a stack of red-ribboned legal deeds. He placed them directly onto the glass table, sliding them beneath Janice’s perfectly manicured fingers.

“As of eight o'clock this morning,” Arthur announced evenly, “the primary Vance Family Foundation has exercised its contractual reversion clause. This residence, the commercial properties on Fourth Street, and the liquid investment portfolio were never Gerald Holloway’s property. They belong entirely to Agnes Vance-Holloway.”
