Chapter 9 - The Legal Guillotine

The ballroom was clearing out fast.

In high society, financial disaster was treated like an airborne contagion. Within ten minutes of the federal agents' entrance, every partner, senator, and investor had vanished, desperate to distance themselves from the radioactive corpse of Preston Vance’s reputation.

Only Preston, Evelyn, my security team, and the federal marshals remained in the vast, glittering graveyard of the Faena Ballroom.

Preston slowly dragged his feet toward the stage. The arrogant, untouchable tech titan had shrunk into a hollow, trembling shell of a man. His bow tie was undone, his tuxedo shirt was stained with spilled champagne, and his eyes were wild with desperation.

"Elena," he croaked, dropping to his knees at the foot of the stage. He reached out with trembling hands, trying to touch the hem of my gown. "Elena, please. Please, my love. Talk to me. We’re married. We took vows before God!"

I looked down at him, my expression unreadable.

"Vows, Preston?" I asked. "Did you remember those vows when you brought your mistress to this gala? Did you remember them when you stood in our foyer and told me I was built only for domestic silence?"

"I was stupid! I was arrogant! I was under immense pressure from the board!" he pleaded, tears streaming down his face, his voice rising into a pathetic sob. "You know how hard it was for me to build Apex! I did it for us! Everything I did was to make you proud, to give you the life you deserved!"

"You didn't build Apex," I said, my voice cutting through his lies like a diamond blade. "You were an actor playing a role. An empty suit I indulged because I once foolishly mistook your ambition for strength."

Charles Vance stepped up beside me, opening a thick leather portfolio.

"Mr. Preston Vance," Charles said, looking down with cold disgust. "Seven years ago, on the morning of your wedding, you signed an unconditional postnuptial agreement in exchange for a twenty-million-dollar equity injection into your first commercial venture."

Preston’s eyes fluttered. "That... that was an administrative document. You said it was routine corporate compliance!"

"It was a complete waiver of all marital property rights," Charles stated with clinical precision. "Under the terms of Section 9, any proven act of infidelity, financial concealment, or corporate malfeasance results in the total, irrevocable surrender of all claims to any joint assets, marital property, and spousal maintenance. You leave this marriage with precisely what you brought into it: zero dollars and sixty-four cents."

"No," Preston gasped, clawing at the stage steps. "No, Elena! You can't do this! I have nothing! I owe four hundred million dollars! The banks will destroy me! I’ll go to prison!"

"You will certainly go to prison," the lead FBI agent said, stepping up behind Preston and placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. "Preston Vance, you are under arrest for securities fraud, grand larceny, bank fraud, and filing false regulatory disclosures with the SEC. You have the right to remain silent."

The handcuffs snapped shut around Preston’s wrists with a clean, final metallic click.

Preston looked up at me one last time, his face contorted in agony and utter disbelief. "Elena... please... don't do this to me... please..."

I looked down at him with neither hatred nor anger—only the cool, absolute indifference one reserves for dust swept from a clean floor.

"You told me earlier today that I had no ambition, Preston," I whispered. "You were wrong. My only mistake was wasting seven years letting an insect believe he was an eagle."

The agents hauled him to his feet and marched him toward the service doors. Evelyn collapsed onto a nearby chair, sobbing hysterically into her hands, completely ignored by the cleaning staff who had already begun clearing the tables.
