Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Ascendant

The sun began to rise over the Atlantic Ocean, casting long ribbons of rose-gold light across the glass towers of Brickell and the deep turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay.
I stood on the eighty-fifth-floor terrace of the Sterling Crown Tower, holding a warm cup of black coffee. The ocean breeze caught the loose silk of my cream-colored cashmere wrap, carrying the clean, sharp scent of the sea.
Charles stepped onto the terrace, holding a leather-bound briefing folio.
"Good morning, Madam Chairwoman."
"Good morning, Charles. How are the markets reacting?"
"Apex Innovations shares collapsed to zero on the pre-market exchange before the SEC halted all trading permanently," Charles reported, a faint smile touching his mouth. "The federal bankruptcy court has approved our petition for receivership. We have already absorbed their clean-energy storage patents directly into Sterling Advanced Engineering. Our stock is up twenty-two percent across the European bourses."
"And the family?" I asked, looking out toward the horizon.
"Evelyn Vance was removed from the Coral Gables estate by the sheriff’s deputies at seven this morning," Charles said smoothly. "She attempted to take three oil paintings and several silver services, but they were confiscated by the court-appointed trustee. She is currently staying at an extended-stay motel near the airport, paid for by a local church charity."
"And Preston?"
"The magistrate denied bail fifteen minutes ago," Charles answered. "Given the flight risk and the seventy million dollars in unaccounted offshore transfers, he will remain at the Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami until trial. His court-appointed public defender estimates a minimum sentencing guideline of twenty-five to thirty years."
I took a slow sip of the coffee.
For seven years, I had hidden my strength. I had played small so that a fragile, insecure man could feel tall. I had absorbed insults, endured Evelyn’s venom, and swallowed my own pride in the naive hope that love could be sustained through sacrifice.
I had learned the most valuable lesson of my life: power should never apologize for its existence, and mercy shown to a parasite is merely self-destruction.
"Charles."
"Yes, Madam Chairwoman?"
"List the Coral Gables estate on the open market."
"Any specific instructions regarding the proceeds?"
I turned toward him, the morning sun reflecting off the deep, untamed blue of my eyes.
"Donate every single dollar to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital," I said softly. "And tell the demolition crew to tear down the west wing before the sale. I don't want a single stone of that house left standing."
"Right away, ma'am."
Charles bowed respectfully and stepped back into the penthouse offices, leaving me alone against the vast, open sky.

The city of Miami stretched out beneath me—vibrant, golden, and awake.
I set my cup down on the marble railing, breathed in the fresh morning air, and stepped inside to run my empire.
