Chapter 6 - Public Dissection

"Charles," I said calmly, looking toward the wing of the stage. "Deploy the audit."

With a single tap on Charles’s tablet, the massive 8K display screens behind me shifted. The elegant gala graphics vanished, replaced instantly by the stark, terrifying reality of a forensic financial audit.

Documents stamped *CONFIDENTIAL – SULLIVAN & CROMWELL* and *UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY* flashed before the audience.

"Seven years ago," I said, addressing the room with the clinical detachment of a surgeon dissecting a specimen, "Apex Innovations was an insolvent startup operating out of a rented warehouse. It survived because an angel vehicle known as Crown Capital infused forty million dollars into its accounts. That angel vehicle was funded entirely by my private family trust."

Preston stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "Elena! Stop this! Turn those screens off! Turn them off right now!"

Two armed security guards from my detail stepped silently into his path, their hands resting flat against their suit jackets. Preston froze, trapped behind the velvet ropes of Table One.

"Over the past twenty-four months," I continued, ignoring him completely, "Mr. Vance engaged in systematic corporate embezzlement. He transferred sixty-two million dollars of restricted research-and-development loans into offshore holding corporations registered in the Cayman Islands under the name of Ms. Vanessa Thorpe."

The spotlight swung violently, pinning Vanessa against her seat. The liquid-gold dress that had looked so glamorous an hour ago now looked like a garish costume under the merciless glare of the cameras.

"No! That’s a lie! That’s privileged information!" Vanessa screamed, jumping to her feet, knocking over a crystal champagne bucket. The ice and vintage wine spilled across the royal table cloth, drenching Evelyn’s silk lap.

"The screen currently displays the wire transfers," I said evenly. "Itemized by date, transaction code, and signature. Including the four-hundred-thousand-dollar transfer used to purchase the Burmese sapphire necklace currently hanging around Ms. Thorpe’s neck—a piece of jewelry Mr. Vance reported to his insurance underwriters as 'stolen during international transit.'"

Whispers of disgust erupted across the ballroom. The junior senator who had been laughing with Preston twenty minutes earlier immediately stood up, threw down his napkin, and walked away from the table as fast as his legs could carry him.

"Furthermore," I stated, my voice ringing with absolute authority, "Apex Innovations does not hold a single proprietary patent for the battery storage technology it claimed to have developed. The underlying patents are, and have always been, the exclusive intellectual property of Sterling Crown Advanced Engineering."

Preston’s hands flew to his hair. He looked around the room wildly, but every face he met was filled with horror, contempt, or predatory glee. The tech founders who had begged him for partnerships were already pulling out their phones, frantically texting their brokers to dump any secondary shares associated with Apex.

"As the sole managing trustee of Sterling Crown Holdings," I concluded, looking straight into Preston’s hollow eyes, "I hereby declare Apex Innovations to be in material default of every covenant under its four-hundred-and-eighty-seven-million-dollar credit facility. We have exercised our legal right of immediate acceleration. The company is insolvent. Its assets are seized. And its operations are terminated as of six o’clock this evening."
