Chapter 6 - The Counterstrike

By one o'clock that afternoon, Margaret Mercer’s world began to crumble in real-time.

From our vantage point inside Arthur Pendelton’s office, we monitored the incoming legal confirmations. The Cook County Circuit Judge had signed the Ex-Parte Emergency Restraining Order without hesitation after viewing the twenty-second video clip of Margaret raising her hand against me while Emma cowered on the floor.

At one-fifteen, a formal notice arrived from First National Bank: Margaret had attempted to execute a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars to an offshore account in London from a branch in suburban Oak Brook. The transaction had been automatically flagged, blocked, and denied by the court-ordered asset freeze.

At two-thirty, Richard Sterling—Margaret’s longtime family attorney—called Daniel’s cell phone.

Daniel set the phone on the center of the conference table and pressed the speakerphone button.

"Daniel?" Richard Sterling’s frantic, aging voice filled the quiet room. "Daniel, what in God's name is happening? Your mother is sitting in my office in absolute hysterics! She says her credit cards were declined at her luncheon, her bank accounts are locked, and she was just served with a restraining order at her apartment building!"

Daniel looked across the table at Arthur, who gave him a calm, approving nod.

"Hello, Richard," Daniel said smoothly. "You're on speakerphone. I am sitting in the offices of Pendelton, Vance & Ross alongside my wife and our legal team."

A sharp, audible intake of breath sounded over the line.

"Pendelton?" Sterling stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating. "Daniel... why have you hired external litigation counsel against your own mother? This is a family matter! We can resolve whatever financial misunderstandings exist internally without involving aggressive trial lawyers!"

"It isn't a misunderstanding, Mr. Sterling," Arthur Pendelton spoke up, his deep, resonant voice taking command of the call. "This is Arthur Pendelton. I suggest you advise your client to retain independent criminal defense counsel immediately."

"Criminal defense?" Sterling gasped. "Now see here, Pendelton, that is entirely unwarranted—"

"Your client has executed over two point two million dollars in unauthorized withdrawals from the Mercer Family Trust using forged signatures," Arthur interrupted coolly. "She has funneled those funds through offshore entities to avoid federal reporting guidelines. Furthermore, we possess forensic evidence suggesting that several authorization documents bear notary seals originating from your law firm, Mr. Sterling."

The line went completely dead for five full seconds.

When Sterling spoke again, his tone was no longer aggressive or paternal; it was trembling with legal panic. "I... I was not aware of any fraudulent activity. Mrs. Mercer presented those documents to my staff as fully executed by Daniel—"

"We will let the United States Attorney’s Office determine the extent of your firm's involvement during discovery," Arthur said flatly. "In the meantime, inform your client that if she attempts to contact Mrs. Claire Mercer, Emma Mercer, or step within five hundred feet of their residence, I will have the Sheriff’s Department execute an immediate arrest for violation of a judicial protection order."

"Daniel... please..." Sterling tried one last time, his voice desperate. "She is your mother!"

"My mother died to me the moment she put her hands on my wife and child, Richard," Daniel said coldly. "Do not call this number again. All future communications will go through Mr. Pendelton."

Daniel reached out and tapped the red disconnect button, ending the call.

He leaned back in his chair, taking a deep breath. For the first time in eight months, the heavy, suffocating cloud that had hung over our marriage seemed to part, revealing clear skies ahead.

"She won't stop with Sterling," I observed quietly. "She still has Julian."

Daniel nodded slowly, pulling his laptop toward himself. "Julian is about to find out that his financial lifeline has been completely cut off."
