Chapter 5 - The War Room

At eight o'clock the following morning, the sun broke through a blanket of grey clouds over downtown Chicago, casting sharp reflections across the steel-and-glass facade of the Pendelton Building.

I sat in a high-backed leather chair inside a sunlit, soundproofed conference room on the thirty-fourth floor. Daniel sat beside me, dressed in a sharp dark suit, holding a steaming cup of black coffee that he hadn't touched. Across the long oak conference table sat Arthur Pendelton—a formidable, silver-haired attorney in his late fifties—alongside his senior forensic analyst, Elena Rostova.

Arthur finished reviewing the cloud video recording of last night’s incident on his iPad. He tapped the glass screen, darkening the display, and set it neatly on his blotter.

"The video footage is exceptional, Mrs. Mercer," Arthur said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "The audio capture is crystal clear. Margaret Mercer explicitly states that she intends to use fraudulent claims of maternal instability to strip you of custody, immediately following a clear physical battery captured on frame twelve."

"Will it be enough for an emergency order of protection?" Daniel asked, leaning forward urgently.

"An ex-parte emergency restraining order will be granted by the Cook County Family Court before two o'clock today, Mr. Mercer," Arthur confirmed smoothly. "Your mother will be legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of your wife, your daughter, your residence, or Emma’s school. If she steps foot on your property, she will be arrested immediately."

"Good," Daniel said, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the armrests of his chair. "What about the trust fraud?"

Elena Rostova, the forensic analyst, pulled open a thick black binder crammed with financial flowcharts.

"This is where the situation becomes significantly more severe," Elena explained, pointing a silver pen at a diagram depicting the flow of capital from the Mercer Family Trust to Vanguard Holdings LLC. "Mrs. Mercer’s illegal transfers constitute multiple counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, and identity theft under federal statutes. Because she used interstate banking networks to move funds to the Cayman Islands, the jurisdiction extends beyond simple probate court."

"Can we freeze her personal bank accounts before she moves whatever is left?" I asked.

"We filed an emergency injunction with the chancery division at six AM this morning," Arthur revealed with a sharp, professional smile. "As of ninety minutes ago, every domestic account registered under Margaret Mercer’s name or Social Security number has been placed under a temporary judicial freeze. She currently cannot execute a wire transfer, write a check, or withdraw five dollars from an ATM."

Daniel let out a long, quiet breath. "She doesn't know yet, does she?"

"She will know within the hour," Arthur replied. "Her personal credit cards will be declined the next time she tries to use them. And by three o'clock this afternoon, a process server will hand her two formal legal packages: the emergency order of protection and a civil summons for conversion, breach of fiduciary duty, and corporate fraud."

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone vibrated violently against the mahogany table.

The caller ID displayed a single word: Mother.

Daniel stared at the vibrating phone. The room went entirely quiet as the device buzzed six, seven, eight times before stopping.

A second later, my phone vibrated.

I picked it up, looking at the screen. A text message from Margaret had just arrived:

Claire. You have turned my son against me and blocked my access to the family accounts. This is your final chance to fix this before I contact the press and reveal what kind of woman Daniel really married. You have one hour to bring my granddaughter to my apartment.

I held the phone out so Arthur and Daniel could read the screen.

Arthur chuckled softly, pulling a yellow legal pad toward himself and making a quick note. "Excellent. Extortion via text message. Please forward that screenshot to Elena immediately, Mrs. Mercer. She's digging her own grave faster than we can dig it for her."

Daniel looked at me, taking my hand in his. His grip was steady, strong, and warm.

"Don't reply to her," Daniel said softly to me. "Let her wait."
