Chapter 7 - The Midnight Breach

The legal assault was total, but a wounded predator is at its most dangerous when backed into a corner.
At 2:15 AM, the lights along the hospital corridor flickered and plunged into darkness. The hum of the industrial air conditioning died, leaving behind an ominous, suffocating silence. A moment later, the red emergency backup lights sputtered to life, bathing the hallway in a dim, bloody glow.
I sat bolt upright in bed. Noah began to whimper in his bassinet.
"Evelyn?" I whispered.
Evelyn was already standing by the door, peering through the small glass pane. "The power to the entire west wing just tripped. That shouldn't happen—the hospital has triple-redundant generators."
A shadow crossed the frosted glass of our door.
"Evie, lock it," I said, throwing off the blankets despite the fire burning in my abdomen.
Before she could throw the deadbolt, the door was kicked inward with violent force. The wood frame splintered, knocking Evelyn backward onto the floor.
A figure stepped into the room, silhouetted against the red emergency lights.
It was Daniel.
He was not in orange scrubs. He was wearing dark civilian clothes, his face bruised, his knuckles scraped raw, smelling of sweat and cheap motor oil. Behind him, a private transport guard lay slumped unconscious against the corridor baseboard.
"Did you really think a set of handcuffs was going to stop me, Grace?" Daniel said, his voice flat, quiet, and utterly devoid of reason.
"Daniel..." I backed toward the bassinet, reaching behind me until my fingers brushed the cold steel of an IV pole. "The police are everywhere. You won't make it out of the parking structure."
"Arthur arranged a private transport for my arraignment transfer," Daniel whispered, taking a slow step toward me. "The driver was cheap. Five thousand dollars in cash, and he looked the other way while I took the service elevator up from the loading dock."
He stopped at the foot of my bed, staring at Noah. The look on his face wasn't the look of a father. It was the look of a collector reclaiming stolen inventory.
"He’s mine, Grace. He’s the five-million-dollar certificate. You broke the deal. You embarrassed me in front of the entire city. Now, we're doing this the hard way."
He lunged toward the bassinet.
With every ounce of strength remaining in my body, I swung the heavy steel IV pole. The weighted base caught Daniel across the side of his head with a sickening crack.
He staggered sideways, howling in rage, his hand clutching his bleeding ear. "You miserable bitch!"
He lunged at me, his fingers wrapping around my throat, slamming me backward against the mattress. The world began to vignette into blackness as his thumbs pressed into my windpipe.
"You should have crawled when I told you to," Daniel snarled in my ear. "You should have died on that nursery rug!"
A deafening crash shattered the room.
Evelyn had seized the heavy ceramic water pitcher from the bedside table and brought it down across the back of Daniel’s skull. The ceramic shattered into a dozen pieces.
Daniel’s grip loosened. He slumped forward onto the bed.
Before he could recover, Detective Sarah Cole burst through the doorway, her service weapon raised and locked in a two-handed grip.
"Don't move! On the ground! Face down! Hands behind your head now!"
Daniel rolled onto his back, blinking through blood flowing into his eyes, staring down the barrel of Cole’s Glock. Behind her, three hospital security guards rushed in with zip-ties and restraint belts.
Cole stepped forward, plant her boot firmly in the center of Daniel's chest, pinning him to the floor.
"Daniel Vance," Cole said coldly, clicking real steel cuffs around his wrists until the metal bit into the bone. "Attempted escape, aggravated assault, burglary, and attempted murder of a protected witness. You just bought yourself a one-way ticket to a maximum-security state penitentiary."
May you like
I pulled Noah out of the bassinet, wrapping him in my arms, sinking down onto the floor beside Evelyn. We held each other, weeping silently in the red emergency light, listening to the metallic click of Daniel being dragged away in chains for the final time.
