Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

Sterling froze. The color drained from his face, leaving behind a waxy, sickly gray. His security guards immediately halted, their eyes darting to Cole’s badge and the unyielding authority in her stance.

"Officer, you don't understand," Sterling sputtered, attempting to maintain his composure. "I have a signed court order from Judge Harrison—"

"Judge Harrison was presented with fraudulent medical documents," ADA Bennett said, stepping beside Cole. "Documents you drafted in exchange for Daniel Vance erasing your four-million-dollar real estate debt. We have the recordings, Robert. We have the burner phone logs. We have the wire transfers routed through the Cayman account you opened last November."

Sterling’s medical chart slipped from his fingers, hitting the floor with a loud slap. His eyes flickered to Evelyn’s laptop, where his own voice was currently queued on an endless digital loop.

"You... you can't prove that was me," Sterling stammered, backing toward the hallway. "That audio is hearsay—"

"Tell that to the Grand Jury," Cole said, stepping forward and grabbing Sterling by the wrist, twisting him effortlessly and slamming him against the hospital wall. "Robert Sterling, you are under arrest for attempted murder, falsifying medical records, insurance fraud, and conspiracy."

The maternity ward went dead silent. Nurses, patients, and orderly staff stared in utter shock as the chief of maternal medicine was cuffed in his own hallway.

As Cole read him his Miranda rights, Sterling’s veneer broke completely. "It was Daniel's idea!" he shrieked, struggling against the cuffs. "Daniel set up the offshore accounts! He told me she was going to die from the hemorrhage anyway! He said nobody would ever look twice at a postpartum complication!"

"Keep talking, Doctor," Bennett said, smiling with predatory satisfaction. "Every word is going directly onto the record."

Sterling was dragged down the hall, his frantic pleas echoing off the tile walls until the elevator doors closed.

I collapsed into the armchair, my breath coming in ragged gasps, holding Noah against my chest. Evelyn knelt beside me, wrapping her arms around my shoulders.

"One down," Evelyn whispered.

May you like

"One down," I repeated, feeling the wetness of tears finally spilling down my cheeks. "Now we destroy Daniel."
