Chapter 4 - The Legal Ambush

For the next two hours, ADA Bennett and Detective Cole sat in stunned silence as Evelyn unspooled the digital contents of Daniel’s *Contingency_G* drive. We laid out the offshore insurance policies, the pharmacy records showing the discrepancy between the prescriptions filled and the inert capsules found in Daniel’s study, and the intercepted phone calls between Daniel and Dr. Sterling.

Bennett’s expression transformed from cautious professionalism into cold, righteous fury.

"This crosses from domestic abuse into attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit fraud, and witness tampering," Bennett declared, jotting notes furiously in a legal pad. "I am upgrading the charges tonight. But we have an immediate tactical problem."

"What problem?" I asked, my heart thumping against my bruised ribs.

"Dr. Sterling is currently on shift in this very hospital," Detective Cole replied, standing up and unholstering her radio. "And Arthur Vance has secured an emergency temporary custody order from Judge Harrison—a judge who happens to play golf with Daniel’s father. They are attempting to serve the hospital administration with that order right now."

Panic surged through me. "They're trying to take Noah?"

"Not while I have a badge," Detective Cole said firmly. "Harrison signed that order based on Sterling’s fraudulent affidavit. Once I present this audio to the presiding judge at the criminal courthouse, Harrison’s order will be vacated, and a bench warrant will be issued for Sterling’s arrest. But it will take me at least ninety minutes to get the warrant signed."

"Ninety minutes is too long," Evelyn said, glancing at the security monitor mounted above the nurses' station outside our room. "Sterling has floor access. He can walk in here with hospital security and claim he is acting under court order to evaluate Noah."

As if summoned by her words, the hallway outside erupted into raised voices.

Through the observation glass, I saw him. Dr. Robert Sterling, dressed in his pristine white lab coat, was walking down the maternity ward corridor accompanied by two armed private security guards and a process server holding a manila folder.

"Mrs. Grace Vance is a danger to her infant!" Sterling’s voice boomed down the hall, designed to attract an audience of nursing staff. "Under section 5150 of the welfare code, I am ordering an emergency psychiatric hold and the immediate removal of the dependent child!"

I leaped out of bed, ignoring the sharp, tearing agony in my lower abdomen. I swept Noah out of his bassinet and retreated to the farthest corner of the room, shielding him with my entire body.

"Detective Cole," Bennett said quietly, stepping between the door and my bed. "Handle this."

The door flew open. Sterling stepped into the room, his pen poised over a medical chart, a mask of grave clinical concern stretched across his features.

"Grace, please step away from the child," Sterling said, his voice dripping with false empathy. "You need help. Daniel has been trying to protect you, but—"

"Step forward another inch, Dr. Sterling," Detective Cole interrupted, stepping into his line of sight with her badge held high and her hand resting on her sidearm, "and I will arrest you on the spot for felony conspiracy to commit capital murder."
