Chapter 10 - The Unbound Life

That evening, I returned to my new apartment—a bright, airy loft overlooking the lakefront.
It was a space I had chosen myself, furnished myself, and secured myself. There were no smart-home master apps controlled by someone else. There were no locked medicine cabinets. There were no hidden cameras or digital cages.
I walked into the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
The woman looking back at me was unrecognizable from the terrified, sweat-soaked figure who had collapsed in the back of a ride-share nine months ago. Her skin was clear and healthy. Her eyes were bright, calm, and fierce. Her posture was straight and strong.
I reached down and unbuttoned my right boot, pulling down my sock to look at my calf.
The surgical scar stretched long and jagged from my ankle to my knee—a thick, pale silver line cutting through skin that had once been dying black flesh.
I ran my fingers gently along the raised mark.
Tristan had tried to use my body as a canvas for my own destruction. He had believed that by destroying my physical health, he could keep my spirit trapped inside that apartment until he cleared his bank accounts.
He had underestimated the human body's will to survive. More than that, he had underestimated my will to survive.
My phone chimed on the granite counter.
I picked it up. It was an automated notification from the foundation's intake portal:
“New intake approved. Resident #001 checked into Secure Housing Unit A. Medical evaluation scheduled for 0900 tomorrow.”

I smiled, feeling a deep, quiet warmth spread through my chest.
I picked up my keys, slipped my coat over my shoulders, and stepped out onto the balcony once more to watch the sun set over the lake.
