Chapter 8 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When the bailiff announced that a verdict had been reached, the atmosphere in the courtroom tightened to a razor's edge.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Dr. Mensah and Detective Vance. Dr. Mensah reached over and held my hand, her grip warm and strong, just as it had been in the trauma bay three months ago.

Judge Katherine Reynolds took her seat on the bench.

"Will the defendant please stand?" Judge Reynolds commanded.

Tristan stood up awkwardly, his steel chains rattling against his orange jumpsuit. His face was entirely devoid of color, his breathing fast and shallow.

"In the matter of the State versus Tristan Whitmore," the jury foreman read, standing tall in his box. "On Count One, Attempted Aggravated Murder in the First Degree... we find the defendant: Guilty."

A collective gasp swept through the gallery.

"On Count Two, Production and Possession of a Restricted Chemical Weapon... Guilty."

"On Count Three, Grand Larceny by Fraud... Guilty."

"On Count Four, Deprivation of Emergency Medical Services... Guilty."

With every "Guilty," I felt a physical weight lifting off my chest—a heavy, suffocating armor I had been carrying for five years, falling away piece by piece until I could finally breathe deeply again.

Tristan collapsed back into his chair, his head dropping into his cuffed hands as his lawyers stared at the table in silence.

Judge Reynolds looked down at Tristan over her glasses, her face carved from stone.

"Mr. Whitmore," Judge Reynolds said, her voice echoing through the chamber. "In my twenty-four years on the bench, I have rarely encountered an act of such cold, calculated, and monstrous cruelty. You took a vow to protect your wife. Instead, you used your intellect and your position to attempt a slow, painful execution for financial gain."

She didn't wait for a pre-sentencing report.

"Under the statutory guidelines for attempted first-degree murder involving chemical agents, I sentence you to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole. You will be remanded immediately to the maximum-security facility at Blackwood State Penitentiary."

She slammed her gavel down with a sharp, final crack that rang out like a gunshot through the room.

"Court is adjourned."

As the guards grabbed Tristan by his shoulders to haul him through the side door to the holding cells, he turned his head wildly toward the gallery, searching for me.

"Reese!" he screamed, his voice breaking into a pathetic, desperate shriek. "Reese! Look at me! Please! Don't leave me in here!"

I didn't look away this time.

I stood up, looked him directly in the eye, and watched in total silence as the heavy iron door slammed shut behind him, cutting off his voice forever.
