Chapter 8 - The Price of Pride

The sound of heavy tires crunching over gravel echoed from the driveway outside, followed by the blinding flash of red-and-blue emergency lights cutting through the grand stained-glass windows of the foyer.
Heavy, authoritative knocks shattered the silence of the house.
"Federal agents! Open the door!" a loud voice commanded from the porch.
Adrian didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at Mara as if she were a ghost that had come to drag him into the abyss.
"You should open the door, Adrian," Mara said softly, taking a step back toward the corner of the foyer. "Learn the rules."
With a loud, metallic crash, the heavy oak front doors were forced open, and six armed federal marshals swept into the foyer, followed by state police officers and lead investigators from the attorney general's office.
"Adrian Vale! Celeste Vale!" the lead agent shouted, stepping forward with a crisp set of legal warrants. "You are under arrest for federal financial fraud, racketeering, money laundering, and first-degree murder in connection with the death of Julianne Vance-Vale!"
"Get away from me!" Celeste shrieked as an officer stepped up to her, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists. "Do you know who I am?! I am Celeste Vale! You can't touch me!"
"Save it for the judge, ma'am," the officer replied impassively, lifting her to her feet and escorting her out the front door into the blinding light of media cameras waiting outside.
Beatrice dropped to her knees, screaming hysterically as she watched her mother being dragged away, while another agent moved in to secure Adrian.
Adrian didn't resist. As the steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists, his eyes remained locked entirely on Mara.
"Why?" he whispered, his voice barely audible over the noise of the arresting officers and radios. "Why did you care about Julianne? You didn't even know her!"
Mara walked slowly up to him, standing just inches away as the federal agent held him by the arms.
"Because Julianne was a human being who deserved to live," Mara said softly, looking directly into his empty, defeated eyes. "And because women like me don't get on our knees for men like you. We stand up, and we take everything you built."
She reached out, gently took the platinum wedding band he had left on the bed earlier—which she had retrieved from her pocket—and slipped it into his jacket pocket.
"Keep the ring, Adrian," she whispered. "You'll need something to remember what arrogance costs."
The agent pulled Adrian around, leading him out the front door into the glaring lights, shouting news reporters, and snapping camera lenses.

As Adrian was pushed into the back of the black federal sedan, he looked back one last time through the rear window.
Mara stood on the grand stone porch of the mansion, surrounded by the cool autumn night air, completely untamed, unbothered, and entirely free.
