Chapter 4 - The Discovery

Back at the Vale mansion, the clock reached 1:30 PM.
Adrian Vale poured himself another glass of twenty-year-old scotch, swirling the amber liquid against the crystal glass. He felt a deep, intoxicating sense of control returning to his chest. The initial frustration he had felt when Mara looked at him with those cold, unyielding eyes had finally faded, replaced by the reassuring comfort of his family's absolute power.
"Go up and check on her, Adrian," Celeste said from her velvet armchair by the fireplace, turning a page of a high-fashion magazine. "Don't be overly cruel, but make sure she understands that her family's firm will be absorbed into ours by the end of the quarter. If she apologizes properly on her knees, you may allow her to have lunch in her room."
"Of course, Mother," Adrian said with a arrogant smile. "She'll be begging for forgiveness by now. Women like Mara think they're strong until they realize they have nowhere else to go."
He walked up the grand staircase, his heavy leather shoes thudding softly against the carpet runner. He felt magnificent. He felt like his father—a master of his household, a ruler of his domain.
Reaching the master suite, he stood outside the heavy oak door for a moment, adjusting his silk tie and assuming a posture of cold authority.
He unlocked the deadbolt with a loud, deliberate clack, making sure she heard the sound of her release. Then he turned the brass handle and pushed the door open.
"Alright, Mara," Adrian announced loudly, stepping into the room with his hands in his pockets. "You've had three hours to think about your attitude. If you're ready to—"
He stopped dead in his tracks.
The master suite was completely empty.
The silk bedspread was smooth and unruffled. The heavy damask curtains swung gently in the breeze coming from an open window on the far side of the room.
"Mara?" Adrian called out, his voice losing its authoritative edge, replaced by a sudden spike of annoyance. "Where are you? This isn't funny!"
He marched across the room, tearing open the heavy doors of the walk-in closet. Empty. He rushed to the master bathroom, pulling back the glass shower doors. Empty.
Then his eyes fell on the bed.
Resting dead center on the white duvet was a single item: the yellowed, grease-soaked rag he had thrown in her face four hours earlier. Beside it sat his high-end platinum wedding band, gleaming under the chandelier light.
"What the hell..." Adrian muttered, his brow furrowing in confusion.
He ran back to the hallway door, shouting down the stairs at the top of his lungs. "Mother! Beatrice! Get up here now! She's gone!"
Heavy footsteps hurried up the stairs as Celeste and Beatrice rushed into the suite, their faces pale with shock.
"What do you mean she's gone?" Celeste snapped, looking around the empty room in disbelief. "The deadbolt was locked from the outside! How could she possibly get out?"
"I don't know!" Adrian yelled, running his fingers through his hair in a sudden panic. "The window is open, but we're on the second floor! There's no fire escape!"
Beatrice walked over to the bed, her eyes widening as she noticed the grease-soaked rag. "Adrian... look."
Celeste marched over to the nightstand, her sharp eyes scanning the room until she noticed something missing from the corner desk. "Where is her leather garment bag? Where are her personal documents?"
"She packed," Adrian whispered, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of his neck. "She... she didn't escape out of desperation. She planned this."
Before Celeste could respond, Adrian's smartphone began to buzz violently in his pocket. Then Beatrice's phone rang. Then Celeste's private line on the nightstand began to chime continuously.
Adrian pulled out his phone. The screen was flooded with notifications: forty-seven missed calls from his corporate executive team, twelve urgent emails from the board of directors, and dozens of breaking news alerts from major financial networks.
He tapped the top news notification with a trembling finger.
The headline read: BREAKING: VALE GLOBAL HOLDINGS FACES SWEEPING SEC AUDIT FOLLOWING MASSIVE LEAK OF OFFSHORE FRAUD AND ILLEGAL TAX SHELTERS.
Below the headline was a clear, high-definition photograph of Adrian’s personal signature on an illegal transfer document involving $120 million in stolen client funds.
"Mother..." Adrian gasped, his face draining of all color as his phone slipped from his hand and shattered against the hardwood floor. "Mother, look at the news..."
Celeste grabbed her own phone, her hands shaking violently as she read the front page of the financial chronicle.
"This is impossible," she whispered, her voice cracking for the first time in her life. "These records were encrypted on our private secure server! No one had access to these files except us!"
At that exact moment, every smart television screen in the mansion automatically powered on, broadcasting a live, emergency press conference from the state attorney general's office.
A stern-faced prosecutor stood at the podium, surrounded by federal agents.
"At 2:00 PM today," the prosecutor announced, "the Department of Justice received an unprecedented volume of authenticated financial and medical evidence regarding Vale Global Holdings and members of the Vale family. We have issued immediate freeze orders on all family corporate accounts, personal assets, and real estate properties. Furthermore, federal arrest warrants have been signed for Adrian Vale, Celeste Vale, and associated board members regarding sweeping fraud, money laundering, and the reopened investigation into the suspicious death of Julianne Vance-Vale."
The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Celeste staggered backward, clutching her chest as her magazine slipped from her hand. Beatrice let out a piercing shriek of horror, dropping to her knees on the floor.
And Adrian stood frozen in the center of the grand master suite, staring at the grease-soaked rag on his bed, finally realizing that the woman he had tried to break had just destroyed his entire life.
