Chapter 5 - The Glass House Crumbles

The grand ballroom of the Richmond Country Club was packed to capacity by two-thirty that afternoon. Crystal chandeliers glittered above rows of velvet chairs, where news crews, corporate investors, and wealthy socialites sat murmuring anxiously.

At the front of the room stood a long dark wood podium bearing the crest of Sterling Enterprises.

Richard Sterling, wearing an immaculate navy suit, stood behind the microphones, trying desperately to project calm authority. Beside him stood Lenora, draped in pearls, forcing a stiff smile, while Adrian stood slightly behind them, his face pale and eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press,” Richard began, his voice booming through the sound system as camera flashes strobed continuously. “Thank you for coming on such short notice. I am here today to address the ridiculous, malicious rumors that have been circulating online regarding our company’s financial health.”

He rested his hands on the podium, forcing a confident chuckle. “Sterling Enterprises remains as solid as granite. Our annual audit is completely clean, and our upcoming merger with European capital funds will proceed as planned. These absurd allegations are nothing more than the product of a disgruntled former family member seeking to ruin our reputation.”

From the back of the ballroom, a loud, clear voice cut through his speech.

“Is that so, Richard?”

The entire room turned around.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open. I walked into the room slowly, wearing a tailored black dress coat over my medical bandages, leaning slightly on my father’s arm for support. Behind us walked Marcus Vance, accompanied by six federal agents in sharp suits and four uniformed police officers.

The room fell into absolute, stunned silence.

“Eleanor!” Lenora gasped, clutching her pearls in shock.

Adrian took an instinctive step backward, his eyes wide with horror as he saw the federal badges glistening under the bright lights.

I walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, every eye in Richmond high society glued to me. Reporters scrambled to turn their cameras toward us, light bulbs flashing like a thunderstorm.

“You claim the company is solid, Richard,” I said loudly, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling as I stopped at the foot of the stage. “Then perhaps you can explain why federal auditors froze all forty of your corporate accounts thirty minutes ago?”

Richard’s face went completely white. “You... you have no right to be here! Guards! Remove these people!”

The country club security guards didn't move an inch; they were staring at the armed federal agents standing behind my father.

“Richard Sterling,” Marcus Vance stepped forward, pulling a thick legal document from his jacket. “I am Special Agent Vance with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I have in my hand an arrest warrant signed by Federal Judge Harris for wire fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy.”

The press corps erupted. Camera shutters clattered like machine guns as reporters shouted questions all at once.

“And Adrian Sterling,” Marcus continued, turning his gaze toward my husband, who was trembling violently. “You are under arrest for federal financial fraud, as well as aggravated felony assault resulting in great bodily harm.”

“Assault?!” Lenora screamed, stepping in front of her son like a frantic hen. “This is outrageous! She fell! She’s an unstable woman who tripped over her own dress at a party!”

“We have the high-definition security audio and video from the baby shower, Mrs. Sterling,” my father spoke up, his voice cutting through her screeches like a steel blade. “Including the clear recording of your son punching my pregnant daughter, and your applause afterward.”

The ballroom gasped in absolute horror. Socialites who had sat next to Lenora for decades turned away from her in disgust, whispering frantically behind their hands.

“No! No! Adrian, do something!” Lenora sobbed, grabbing her son’s arm.

Two federal agents walked onto the stage, grabbed Adrian’s arms, and pulled them forcefully behind his back. The crisp, loud click-clack of silver handcuffs locking around his wrists echoed through the microphone on the podium, broadcast live to thousands of viewers across the state.

“Eleanor! Please!” Adrian wept as he was dragged toward the aisle, his arrogant composure completely shattered into pathetic begging. “Talk to your dad! I was wrong! I love you! Think about our baby!”

May you like

I stood straight, my father by my side, and looked Adrian directly in the eyes with absolute, unyielding coldness.

“Her name is Maya,” I said softly, so only he could hear as he was led past me. “And you will never see her face again.”
