Chapter 4 - The Fraud Unravels

By eight o’clock the following morning, the private recovery room was filled with the soft morning sunlight streaming through the windows. I sat up in bed, IV lines running into my arm, holding a warm cup of tea my father had brought me.

On the wall-mounted television, the local news broadcast was running a breaking story:

“BREAKING NEWS: Sterling Enterprises under federal investigation for multi-million-dollar financial fraud. Federal agents were seen executing search warrants at the Sterling family estate in North Richmond early this morning...”

I took a quiet sip of tea, feeling a deep, satisfying chill replace the trauma of the previous night.

My father walked into the room, followed by Marcus Vance, who carried two heavy leather briefcases and laid them on the table beside my bed.

“How are you feeling, sweetheart?” my father asked gently, leaning down to kiss my forehead.

“The incision hurts, but I saw Maya twenty minutes ago in the NICU,” I smiled softly, the warmth returning to my face for the first time. “Dr. Vance says she can come to my room by this evening.”

“That is the best news I’ve heard all day,” my father said, before turning his attention to Marcus. “Show her what we found.”

Marcus opened the briefcases, spreading out dozens of financial spreadsheets, audited bank statements, and tax filings across my bed table.

“Eleanor, your forensic work over the last two weeks was brilliant,” Marcus said admiringly. “You laid the foundation, but once we pulled the federal warrants this morning, the whole house of cards collapsed.”

He pointed to a flow chart showing offshore wire transfers. “Adrian and his father, Richard Sterling, have been running a massive Ponzi scheme through Sterling Enterprises for five years. They defaulted on three major European loans six months ago. Their entire lavish lifestyle—the mansion, the yachts, the country club memberships—was being funded entirely by embezzling from your late mother’s trust fund.”

“They thought I wouldn't notice because I was pregnant and distracted,” I said coldly, looking over the familiar ledger numbers I had cracked weeks ago. “Adrian thought I was stupid.”

“They needed you to stay quiet until the merger went through next week,” Marcus continued. “Once they realized you were auditing the accounts, Adrian brought Claire into the picture to create a public scandal, humiliate you into leaving, and declare you mentally unfit to manage the trust.”

“And Claire?” I asked, looking up at Marcus. “Who is she really?”

Marcus chuckled grimly, pulling out a mugshot from a secondary file. “Her real name is Claire Jenkins. She’s an unemployed former actress hired by Lenora Sterling through an agency in Atlanta. She was paid fifty thousand dollars to play the role of the ‘pregnant mistress’ to publicly humiliate you at the baby shower.”

I stared at the mugshot of the young woman who had stood over me while I bled on the floor, smiling as Adrian punched me.

“She’s not pregnant?” I asked.

“Not in the slightest,” Marcus confirmed. “And she’s currently in an interrogation room at federal headquarters, spilling every detail of the plot to save her own skin. She’s already handed over recorded phone calls with Lenora Sterling discussing how they planned to frame you.”

My father stepped up to the side of my bed, placing his hand over mine. “The grand jury is convening at two o’clock today, Eleanor. By four o’clock, arrest warrants will be signed for assault, wire fraud, conspiracy, and grand larceny.”

I looked at my father, then down at the papers, feeling a cold, unwavering resolve settle in my chest.

“No,” I said softly.

My father and Marcus both looked at me, surprised.

“Don't arrest them at their home,” I said, looking up with a sharp, calculating smile. “Adrian’s father is holding a press conference at three o’clock at the Sterling Country Club to deny the financial rumors. He invited all the local media and high-society donors.”

I looked at my father. “Arrest them there. In front of everyone.”
